Them whites gonna need some bleach. They stained with Windrock and GMP red clay...

So, the 80 is due for an overhaul. The GX is moving to a new home, so the 80 will be the overland rig so Bruce got called up to the majors. So now he has assumed the position.

Saturday morning started with stripping the interior to pressure wash the grungy carpets that have 10 years of gunk on them and more recently had served as a pee mat for the mice.

He gutted and the carpets have the first pressure wash over and are drying to see what happens next. Likely some carpet cleaner, another round with the washer before going back in.

After that I started taking things off to free the old HP8 out front. Thankfully everything came loose without much fuss. I cut the old frame to axle line since it is getting replaced anyway.

Axle is out and ready to tractor out into the yard for pressure washing before I start stripping it.

Got it on some take-off 80 rims to roll it out from under.

Pulled the Slee arms off to give them a clean and refresh. They feel like 50 lbs each.

Currently on step 6 for today.

20210807_154036.webp

Tomorrow, pressure wash the axle, then on the stand and start tearing it down. Then start going thru my 80 stash to see what all I have and then what I need to get ordered.

You need a lift brother doing that kind of work on the floor is for the young ones.

Agree. Have a reinforced section in the slab for a 2-post, just haven't got that far yet.

Yep always fun doing these projects on the ground.

Axle got pressure washed and gunk'd. Let it dry then brought it in and got it on stands. Pulled calipers and soft lines off. @Mrsjynx Asked about rotors and I remembered I had a brand new set of TT I bought for the 92 that has since been rehomed.

So putted the 55 over to the barn and started pulling stuff from the stash.

Hoard much?

I need to order a set of tie-rod ends and I think im going to go ahead and get a new set of calipers and pads from Napa while I'm at it, but I pretty much have everything necessary to go completely thru the front end except maybe bronze bushings for the spindles, if I can still get those.

Only thing I didn't bring out was the marks- geared PT t-case that is still in the barn. Well see how time looks before I decide if I want to get into that this go around.

This week is going to be a whirlwind at work, so may not be back in the shop til Friday, but im ready to start tearing it down for a long overdue overhaul. If I get the diff out I might look into a lunchbox for it if I end up getting the t-case in.

Well Saturday was a rest day. It had been a long week and I was gassed and my body was not interested in doing much, so I took the day off.

So today I went ahead and tore down the axle.

Passenger side was clearly the problem child. Pretty sure the bottom spindle bolt is not a drain plug...
20210815_143617.webp

Drivers side actually still had bearing grease on the spindle and the birf was still packed with moly.
20210815_151958.webp

Pulled all the brackets, brake lines and the diff and now I have the bare housing ready for cleaning and paint.
20210815_155607.webp

All the bits are on the table ready for cleaning, inspection, paint and reassembly.

And while I was getting dirty, @Mrsjynx was busy putting the interior back together.

This is the cleanest the interior has ever been since I've owned the truck.

Now just have to get the seats cleaned up and decide what to do with them. I'd like to find some fresh covers for the front pair and maybe a new seat foam for the drivers side to make the ride more pleasant.

Might look into a new head unit that is a little more modern with Bluetooth capabilities, maybe double DIN with a backup camera.

No pictures tonight, just brown buggs from wire wheelin' the axle housing. Split the arms off the knuckles and pulled the drag link and steering stabilizer off the truck.

Trying to get the housing cleaned up this week and will probably start cleaning the knuckle parts up after work, this week.

Yep, never thought I'd see the day she voluntarily rehomed it, but she decided we need to rehome it to help pay for her new toy. It will soon be in the capable hands of a new driver with probably the best land cruiser support crew in the southeast.

Well, I lost the last 2 weekends to feeling like blah, so now I'm gonna have to put in some hours during the week to try and get this thing back together. Also, side note, but I noticed it was almost 3 years to the date between the last post before the revival and this latest run. Hopefully once I get him up and going, there will be more adventures and less sitting in the shop...

Minor update, but MAJOR victory tonight.

It's hotter than hades out, so why not play with fire. Stopped today to pick up a MAP setup to try and break the blown hard line loose.

I didnt get a picture of the frame side, but I was able to get the heat on the flare nut and got one end loose pretty easy. To my shock and surprise.

However the other end wasn't going to be nearly as cooperative. Fortunately the heat and PB Blaster also released the bolt holding the frame bracket on, so I pulled the whole thing off to get a better shot at it.

20210824_191035.jpg

Before I started this, it got so hot it literally blew the remaining crimped in soft line out of the fitting.

2 cherry red heat cycles and some PB smoke later and I got some movement.
20210824_191057.jpg

And here it is in all its glory.

20210824_191223.jpg

I'm pretty sure the line blew right at the flare nut. It looks super thin right here.
20210824_192749.jpg

So now it's out, I have to try and get a replacement custom bent. Got a couple options I'm going to explore. Worst case, I'll buy a prebent section, cut it to length and the re-flare it.

Major victory. Now I think all the primary offenders are out. Now cleaning, painting and reassembly needs to get rolling.

I just pulled the rear hose from the hard line in the ToolShed. I can not believe how easily it came loose after sitting for 20 years in AZ. The brake fluid was even still fairly clear/clean

That makes me happy and sad at the same time.

Well today I finally got a good day in the shop.

@Mrsjynx was busy in the parts washer getting the gunk off while I was ruining some wire wheels in a die grinder (pretty sure the grinder runs higher than the listed 4500 ram max...)

Anyway, knuckle washed, cleaned and ready for paint.

20210828_163243.webp

Cleaned up the SLEE arms. Wire wheel to knock off the loose powder, then 80g and 150g before tape and paint.

After first coat of Rustoleum Rust converter

20210828_125557.webp

Also finished cleaning and prepping the axle and got a coat of rust converter on it too.

20210828_125622.webp

The day was spent wire wheeling, scotch-briting, taping, priming and painting.

Everything got cleaned, primed and a coat of gloss black.

Everything should be dried up solid tomorrow and I'll start reassembly on the front end.

Still need a few misc. brake and steering bits, but moving in the right direction.
