Breaking the Captains Chairs Barrier

Yeah those sienna seats are on sliders too.
I’d wage that the sequoia could possibly be bolt in to the LC. Who better to experiment then the guy with both the LC and a Seq pro.

These are a known mod with the Ford Econoline crowd. U-Joint Offroad, and I think some other vendors, make direct-fit base plates to make the install pretty painless.

I’ve thrown the LC front driver seat into the second row once to see what would be possible. The big difference is on the depth of the seat bottom which causes the whole seat to sit much higher then the standard back seats. The headrest nearly touches the ceiling. I suspect the same would happen with the sequoia seats. Need to remember Our second row LC seats are pretty thin on the bottom since they already sit up on a ledge higher than the front seats. Also, the sequoia captains chairs do not have side airbags in the bolsters where our LCs do, so I would lose that added safety benefit and have to make the airbag sensor play nice. I may eventually throw one back there just to see what it looks like but I’ve already pulled the sequoia seats out before when installing dynamat. It’s an easy 4 bolt job like the LC but those seat bottoms are thick. Also there is the ever present problem that the bolt holes in the LC are different for both the passenger rear seat and the driver rear seat so it would almost certainly require drilling at least one new hole in the floor for each seat.

Can a second 40% passenger side LC seat replace the 60% driver's side? I ask this without walking out in the driveway to look. Seems like the seatbelts would be the only problem, since it would need to be mirrored.

No, the width between the mounting points for each side are different, much wider on the 60% side driver side.

I guess I’m the dissenting opinion…go for it!!!

Hack off the center portion, modify the remaining framework as needed and weld to the remaining seat. I’d use a professional upholstery shop to complete the remaining leather work.

As far as resale blah blah blah. You can find a second row somewhere. Not the end of the world.

Internal airbag will be on the wrong side.

Still have the cruiser. Minivan makes much more sense as a daily family car.
I wasn’t talking about the loss of your cruiser. 😁

In all seriousness, kudos to the OP for exploring this. One downside, no cup holders + kiddos = trouble

I love the design of the second row of the Ford Explorer, captains chairs that allows entry to the third row but with a very low floor-level center console which has a couple cupholders. Maybe the Sequoia is similar and others too....

Quick update. Before moving any further I wanted to make sure that I could reassemble the seat to make sure I did not inadvertently damage any components during disassembly. Everything went together in about 15 minutes which was much quicker than how long it took me to tear down. I’m confident now that I could swap back and forth to no middle backrest fairly quickly, maybe even with the seat still installed in the car. I will say that now having it all back together, it looks so nice and clean and the prospect of having to replace the whole unit if it doesn’t work out is pretty intimidating. I think for now my strategy will be to wait and see if I can find a spare bench, preferably in the terra color that I wouldn’t mind chopping up at the risk of only being out maybe $1k as I see a bunch of used ones on eBay. Also need to consider the possibility on whether or not we even hold onto the cruiser as we are approaching a possible business acquisition and may be looking for cash, so again at this point the prudent thing for us to do is pause while continuing the search for a donor bench.

I’m wanting to swap out to captains chairs too

Curious the 460 and the 570 both have captains chair options .... wonder if those could work?

570 does not have captains chair option.

Target.... fairly cute 40 yo blonde pulling kids out - definitely captains chairs - 100% two separated individual single non attached seats and kid from the back walking in between them - thats actually how I realized what it was.... seeing the kid walk between and not have to crawl... I even pretended to be getting something out of my LC for a long time so I could take second looks.... No pics - sorry that's just creepy...

This was never offered as an option on US lx570s so it either wasn’t a LX or it was a custom job.
