howdy, got a snow storm in boston today so i decided to take the 4runner out around 11pm when no one was on the road i am usaly not in 4wd and doing 35mph i am usaly doing 2-5 mph so i haven't noticed this noise yet...anyways i am getting a grinding type noise on the drivers side kinda the same noise i had with the ifs but not nearly as bad (turned out to be the brass bushings) i am thinking its the same thing on the solid axle. i sometimes get the noise when i am turning left so what i am getting at is do you guys think its the bushing or something else
thanks, nat
1988 4runner

it was all setup last summer the only thing i did not replace was that dam bushing. bifs looked to be in great shape from the doner axle i cleaned them all out and re-greased them

noise almost resembles a tire rubbing the plastic on a fender well im not to worried about it since its rare that i get the noise

A loose brass bushing in the spindle won't really make any noise, unless it's also full of sand. What usually happens is the Birf flops around inside the knuckle and the axle shaft has a lot of runout, so it fails the axle tube seal. Then you're knuckle felts start oozing gear lube.

I would take a look at the brake dust shields, it could be one is bent slightly and it's rubbing on the rotor, or there is a rock behind it.

may be the birf then since i have the dust shield eliminator rings

Another thought, although I don't think applies to you:

If either the bushings or Birfs are new, then they can ba a tight fit getting the Birf into the bushing, and eventually the bushing will sieze to the Birf and spin in the spindle. I've had this happen twice now, and seen it on other trucks too. Makes a kinda crunchy grinding sound when it does.

What you must always do when installing new bushings and/or Birfs is do a dry test fit. Make sure it spins easily. If it's anything other than an easy fit, I hone the inside of the bushing out with a 3-stone brake hone.

x2. Mine would rattle in 2wd on bumpy roads.

Exactly. By the time those bushings are pressed in they squeeze down and the birfield can be tight. When I did mine I had to machine one, but not the other.

i will look into that brass bushing being tight thanks guys:D
