Hey guys I haven't found anything like this yet so I thought I'd make a thread.

looking to replace my front brakes on my 60 do what do y'all recommend? I'm looking to replace calipers rotors pads and even the lines. I've called oriellys the're pretty reasonable just wanted to know other options…

Also where did y'all buy stainless steel brake lines (for all of them)

Thanks!

it all depends on what kind of driving you do. I run ceramic pads and stock rotor an i dont have any trouble. Most of my driving is logging roads and pavement. there is a rotor and pad kit drilled and slotted on ebay for around a $100.00.
i have used this guy orangefj45 his name i George if i remember right he is out of california really nice and knows his stuff i'm sure there are others on MUD check the vendor section.

I looked a doing the "4Runner conversion" on my HJ60... but opted out due to the debate whether or not it is actually "that much better" over an improved stock setup with newer more modern parts. YMMV.
At least with the stock set up you know exactly what you have. No need for proportioning valve, new line adapters and extra wrenching/massaging.

I ended up going with a better than stock upgrade (sourced from MAF) and it works great for the driving I do.
New DBA rotors, new Semi Metallic pads, new stock calipers, SS brake lines, new rear wheel cylinders, new springs and retaining clips...etc...

For the rotors, I would go with Mountain or Brembo, as long as it isn't made in China. I upgraded to the 4runner calipers and am happy. I did not replace the master cylinder and personally don't think it needs / should be replaced. There are many threads on this. Do a search and you will have lots of reading material.

swap out your rubber brake hoses.... front and rear...on top of whatever else you do.

Wow thanks for the input guys. I don't think I want to mess with 4runner brakes right now. What website did you guys buy your SS brake lines? looking to redo all of them while Im down there. Some people have referred to the vendors list started looking but couldn't find any whole kits.

You prolly won't find any kits - at least none that I know of. You'll be better off sourcing individual, quality components. SS lines are had at SOR, MAF, FJparts.com, cruisercorps, cruiseroutfitters.com coolcruisers, etc ...

You're best off sticking with quality stock-style rotors, as mentioned, Toyota OE, Brembo, USA Raybestos, and quality rebuild calipers from Toyota, NAPA, Cruisercorps.com. Quality organic pads stop better. Ceramic last longer.

How are the knuckles? If they're in need of service, now would be the time to do that, too...

I recently asked one if the Toyota "old school" legends about this at a local event as mine needed complete overhaul. He said they use Napa brand rotors on all in-house builds and that was good enough for me. I kept it stock and can't complain about performance. New hoses all around for sure as well as a fluid flush to rid the system of contamination. As a side note I just did a complete heep brake overhaul at work on a YJ with allegedly upgraded brakes on those hopelessly undersized axles running 35's and can say without a doubt that even stock FJ setup is vastly superior to that wimpy setup.

remember its not a race car....its a brick with 4 tires. NAPA stuff works fine, there are some extended brake hoses pn that's been posted on the site for a few times...search around for those. 4runner caliper mod is easy and is a bolt on... Get pads, hoses, and shoes from NAPA and have a nice day.

rock auto web site is another good source....stock is fine...

I have the 4runner calipers and they bolt on...you don't have to change the mc to have good brakes with them. But you are driving a 20+ year old truck....swapping out the mc is not a bad idea even with a stock type replacement.

I had put the 4runner caliper with 4runner brake booster and new SS line.

I was not happy with the braking performance. I first thought that was the rust on the rotor since my Cruiser was sitting in my driveway since several month (when I say ''rust'', I mean surface rust that usually built on the rotor when the car is not used). So I drove around using a lot my brake to used the rotor and removed the rust but it change nothing. I could even lock the rear wheels at ''street speed'' but not the front wheel... The spongy feeling was always there.

The vacuum was good too.

Then, I have put back the original brake booster without improvement.

Well, now, I'm looking for the T100 master cylinder mod.

I was very disappointed since I've read a lot of good comment about that mod and even in that thread people made the same mod as me without the problem that I experience.

Will see in few week, the Cruiser is at the paint shop !!! :)

If you want more bite to your brakes, swapping the booster for one from a V6 4Runner is a great option. It bolts right up and from what I've read, is the best bang for your buck upgrade for a 60's brakes. I just installed one on mine and did a little write up in my thread, but I haven't been able to drive it much due to other problems coming up. When I took it around the block it had noticeably more bite (although there is still some air in my system and its hard to feel where it starts grabbing).
