these are directional yeah? is that why you only got 4?

Yes the tread is directional. I got 4 because I still have new spare. The spare won't match but that doesn't bother me.
no point either. unless you can predict which side you get a puncture on that is...

New tires got put on this morning.

I've driven about 40 miles on them so far most of which was highway. I'm comparing them to the worn MTR's that came off, but they are surprisingly smooth. I expected a noisy tire with some vibration from the aggressive tread. They are actually really quiet (quieter than the MTR) up to about 75mph, then a bit of a hum starts and gets a little more noticeable between 75-85mph. Really pleased with that unexpected surprise.

I knew they were an aggressive tire when I ordered them but seeing them in person, they are a meaty tire. More aggressive looking in person.

Time will tell how they do in different conditions but so far I'm pleased.

I like it!
The wider tread gives a more aggressive look.

They're the same size/width as the MTRs they replaced.
Yeah, but the MTR tread width kind of cones in just at the tread.

Didn't you just do new lower control arms & new bushings? Tell us the scoop...

I have all new upper and lower control arms from Jason at Trail Tailor. They just showed up this week but I haven't had time to install them yet.

I'll be documenting the install for Jason (and others), and also doing a review on them down the road after I get some road and trail miles on them.

I have a trip planned in January that should involve ~300 road miles and ~400 trail miles if all goes well and weather cooperates. That should be a good test of the arms.

Looking forward to your review of the new arms, they sure seem nice.

Boxrocket,
I just picked this up a couple of weeks ago because my 4Runner is too nice to take in the woods and I have grown tired of Jeeps. I plan on building it slowly, but am first making all of the necessary repairs expected for a 220k mile truck. I saw your 80 on a Google image search long before I bought one and before I joined this forum. I have spent most of the afternoon reading every page of this thread and am sure I will be reading it several times for reference. Thanks for taking the time to document the great work. As other's have said your ongoing build is truly inspirational

Really glad you like what I've done and that it's been somewhat helpful! Thanks for the compliment!
Your new cruiser looks great and it's an awesome color too!

Hey man!!

How you liking the tires?
They are on my wish list
So far so good. Some pros some cons compared to the MTRs at this point but I don't have enough trail miles on them yet to make a judgment in that regard.

Here's my take at this point....
They are a Load Range E tire compared to the Load Range D of my MTRs (or any other tire I've previously had) so the sidewalls feel stiffer. That's not necessarily a bad thing, especially on the road. But I'm still figuring out what tire pressures work best with them on the road and the trail. Generally speaking I'm finding I need to run them a good 5psi below what I'm used to have a similar feel.

They have done surprisingly well on the hardpack snow and ice. The MTRs were dismal on ice (until you have them siped). I have not had the Baja Claws siped yet but they have had good traction and much less tendency to slide and spin than the MTRs. I wasn't expecting that at all, in fact, I was planning on them being worse in the winter. So it's been a nice surprise.

They definitely have more road noise. The first few days I thought they were very quiet, and actually for a mud tire they aren't that noisy going down the road. But under about 15mph you hear them more (maybe because engine noise isn't drowning them out) but you also feel the tread blocks hitting the road as you come to a stop. They feel smooth and have acceptable noise levels at normal city and highway speeds though.

That's about all I can comment on at this point until I get some more offroad miles. So far I like them fine. Do I like them better than the MTR? Probably not, unless they completely blow me away offroad. I think they will do well offroad, but the MTR is a great offroad tire for what I do so the bar is pretty high. We'll see.

I don't know what I'm doing. Sorry

But if you do what BoxRocket aka Adam has done, you'll be doing just fine. That would be a great rig to emulate...
