Bolt on turbo kit

yeah I totally feel for everyone right now. My sisters are all in nursing so they are busy as can be. But man it’s utterly depressing to hear how many of my customers and friends have lost their jobs

Joey I’m cool with the wait. I’m super lucky my job is essential so I don’t need a refund. Initially when this pandemic started my first thought was to cancel. I’m glad I didn’t. I think this thing will end sooner than later.

Question: I see a number of installs where the Intake Air Temperature sensor is installed in front of the turbo, rather than after the turbo. Wouldn't you want to know the turbo outlet temperature rather than the temperature of the air coming into the air box? Curious what the theory is.

Because the system doesn't work if you put the IAT post turbo. The MAF has to know how much air is being brought in, and MAF's don't function well measuring compressed air.

I was not clear, but I was referring to aftermarket gauges, not the fuel injection system's IAT sensor. I understand why that needs to be before the turbo. I keep seeing aftermarket sensors put into the air canister neck pre-turbo. For an aftermarket gauge, aren't we more interested in the temperature after the turbo? The temperature in the air canister is pretty close to outside air temp, most of the time. On the trail going slow in the summer, it is probably a significant delta from ambient outside temp.

Oh I don't know enough about that particular setup to know why it is there. If you are doing it just for the turbo, yes you would want it post compressor, but if you are not doing anything about it is kind of a waste. Now if you are using it to trigger meth/water injection, etc it makes sense, but even that prevents problems spraying directly onto the element.

That is my rig.

I bought the 14-in-1 gauge for my set-up.
My primary sensors I monitor are boost, oil temp, water temp, oil pressure, & AFR.

The gauge came with numerous other sensors that I don’t have listed on my primary display. I put it there because I wanted to know the air temp going into my engine, in relation to under hood temps & ambient outside temps.

I wanted to know what my under hood temps were to determine if auxiliary cooling measures would be beneficial. (underhoodheat soak).

I have the Wits End down pipe blanket (not installed yet), and thinking of doing the Poison Spyder hood louver panel.

Went on my first shakedown hwy cruise after turbo.

Stats:

70 miles, approx.
cruise set at 75mph
total drive time 4.5 hours
max rpm 5,555
fuel econ 12.5 mpg
total fuel used 14.6 gal
Power button = OFF
max water temp = 216ºF
A/C on the entire time
max speed =80 mph
approx 12 miles of off roading with 25psi in the tires, which skewed the results somewhat. Normal street pressures are 32 front/ 35 rear.

Slight head wind most of the way with lots of steep climbs on the interstate.
She downshifted ONCE during the whole way there.

On the return trip, tried couple of things. I set the cruise at 70mph but she had to downshift couple of times. Somewhere around 75mph is her happy power band. I also adjusted the kickdown cable (aka throttle cable in the FSM) so the shifting seems more spot on to me.

I'm still experimenting with the power button on and off around town to see how I like the city driving response.

This is the FIRST time I was able to use cruise control since I moved to NM from IL, where the elevation was around 100'. Driving the 80 will become fun, once again for all those hours of seat time. Turbo made the 80 great again

Max boost was 6.8psi. Water temp stayed <193. AFR stayed in a safe range. Though, my sensor was reading 15-15.1 at idle which is weird to me that its not right at 14.7. going to give it a few drive cycles as the battery was disconnected during install.

Yeah it is! new motor when i bought it with a thrown rod and 84k. Still smelled new inside. I've defiled it since. Almost felt guilty modifying it, but i'm never getting rid of it.

As in since the ECU is targeting based on its narrowband o2 signal? I'm not concerned with it, yet. any throttle brings it down, though some points of idle were 15.5+.
The readings on the gauge are from a wideband in the downpipe.

Correct, the ECU doesn't know exactly what the AFR is. All that the ECU knows is if it is in range for the narrow band. Which is typically 15.0-14.2. So if you are in that range the ECU is happy.

So if your truck is idling at 15.0, the narrow band sends the ECU a good to go signal, but your wide band shows that it is really 15.0
