Fantastic work. If the rear passengers complain about legroom, just tell them to ride on the roof.

How did you seal around the roof openings, by the way?

"broletariet" Nice work! Big balls! Who did the welds?
Me. And trust me, figuring out how to actually access some of those areas totally sucks.

Still have to do it, actually. My plan is to cut a split donut of thin sheet metal with a 2" ID and an OD of like 3.5" or so. Then basically adhere/seal that on the roof, around the tube. Then essentially "caulk" the upright tube with a small radius of sealant. I'm open to input on this if anyone has suggestions.

PPG AEROSPACE PRODUCTS - AEROSPACE COATINGS, SEALANTS, TRANSPARENCIES, AND MORE - PPG Industries - Aerospace

I use these products quite regularly at my job. You would be quite pleased if you were able to get your hands on some.

Honestly, Inuse what the manual calls for. Jets have a lot of sealant applied to the exterior surfaces which must perform in environments at extreme ends of the elemental spectrum.

3M makes good stuff. Strong reisistsnce to UV degradation is desirable in your application so you don’t have to restore the sealant every year.

Look at the 2nd to last pic. Theres a connector across the cowl... but yep.

Oh, you mean that dirty big 2" tube?

In all seriousness if you're familiar with sealants and so on - I was going to use 3M 740, which apparently is just some SMP sealant that's UV resistant

I would use a polyurethane sealant (sikaflex etc)
It sticks like s*** to a blanket,
copes with flex and movement better, (will stretch by up to 10% of joint thickness, silicone is at about 2%)
Polyurethane will fully cure (SMP, not so sure about, in my experience, it stays like sticky snot for months)
Polyurethane can be painted over.

I'm glad I could offer up some inspiration/motivation to do your hybrid cage. And I'm sorry at the same time.

Cage looks good, judging from the position of your body pillars you must be a fair amount shorter than myself.

The D-pillars were the most difficult to punch through, there is a lot of meat back there. They are the most intrusive in terms of cargo space, too. I think with the passenger compartment secured, it will survive in a roll. Especially with the weight balance.

Cage did come out good, glad to see another hybrid cage out there now.

How about using a rubber grommet around the tubes to allow slight movement (since there will be some) and still help seal the body to the tube for weather purposes.

I'm impressed with the overhead welding with MIG! Looks GREAT!

The seat is as back as far as it goes stock... im 6'2. But you may have extension rails?

Thanks. Your design helped a ton.

Nice to see this on here. It's a brave project and even braver posting it for us all to critique. ;)
