BlackStone Engine and Gear Oil Report (should I be worried?)

Sorry to bump such an old thread, but I figure I'd update

I took an oil sample @ 203K+ miles in January of 2010, but kept it on the shelf until I could get another sample @ 250k+ and send it in all at once.

The sample at 203k had 7,100 miles on the interval according to the odometer
(7,526 miles on GPS due to oversized tires)

The sample at 250k had 10,600 miles on the interval according to the odometer
(11,236 miles on GPS due to oversized tires)

I also took an ATF sample at 212k miles when I did my first knuckle service and replaced the original filter.

The ATF oil sample had 21,000 miles on the interval according to the odometer
(22,260 miles on GPS due to oversized tires)

Everything seems to be working top notch and the only gripe I have is an oil leak that sprouted around 195,000 miles :meh:

I have yet to tend to it as it never drips on my driveway, however, the side of the block usually gets coated between intervals

I asked if I should step up to either 10w-40 or 15w-40 based on the mileage and outcome of the samples (since that seems to be what most of the folks here use), but I don't think I'll be changing anytime soon ;)

Sent in another sample to Blackstone

This one was taken at 403,706 miles with 13,700 miles on the interval

Oil used was Mobil Delvac 15w-40

Wear looks the same, but the TBN jumped to 7.0

Also sent in a sample of the catch can oil just for kicks :hmm:

Blackstone_Catch_Can_Sample403706miles.jpg

It showed high levels of copper due to the hardware used in my catch can setup, but none shown in my crankcase oil sample

I've always been curious about the quality (or lack of) of the oil caught in catch cans as I know many people who tend to dump theirs back into the crankcase (sumthin I'd never do)

Given these results, I figure if I did dump it back it, I'd get a false wear readings

Some incredibly good and scientific data here. This is sort of the holy grail of engine wear data - an analysis of the engine oil (et al) for more than half the engine's lifespan. I will link people to this thread when they obsess about engine oil for no reason. Seems like the time has finally come for a new head gasket for you - I would say that, after 400k or so, you've gotten most of your money's worth out of it. Bravo.

What's the point of a catch can with this engine?
