After seeing Treeroot's Satoshi grill mod https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/229592-fjz80-strut-grill-satoshi-grill-mod-style.html I knew that this was something I wanted to do. This took way longer to do than anticipated but was a fun project over the last few months.

I used standard mesh grill you can pick up at a local metal supply shop, flat black Rustoleum paint for the mesh, and Testor 1813 Black Pearl enamel paint for the frame and trim pieces. The Toyota emblem is from a 1980's 60 series.

Overall I am very happy with the results.

Very clean design. I like it.

Do not take this as a critique on what you've accomplished, but...
the second and third photos gave me an eerie feeling of "That's what it would like like if Toyota had really done the FJ Cruiser right!":D

I was thinking the same thing.

Looks freakin killer. This is definitly going on the list of things to do:cheers:

Thanks everyone for the compliments!!! :D

I dig it! I think it would look good if the TOYOTA was color matched to the truck too.

I hadn't even thought about that. I tried it with the stock white/beige color and it just wasn't working for me. I always liked the black pearl sombrero emblem over the silver chrome which gave me the idea to try and match the TOYOTA emblem to black pearl.

The nice thing is that now that it is done it is easy to take apart and play with the colors. I may try and find a color match to the truck and see how it works on the emblem.

That is funny:lol: I didn't notice that until you pointed it out.

Photoshop it with different colors to give you a better idea. Beats spraying and respraying until you are happy. :D I was actually inspired by treeroots grill too, and have one for mine that I designed about 6 months ago. Maybe now I need to actually do it!

Looks damn good ... If I could just get off my lazy rump.... nice work though !

any pics of the build?
I've never liked the idea of plastic "guarding" my radiator... would be very interested to see how you did this.

I do not have any pics of the build as I am terrible about documenting during a project. I pretty much followed the directions found here 4Runners.org - The Satoshi Grill Mod. The only difference is that I did not use pipe strapping behind the grate as I did not want this to show. Instead I cut the grill so that it was a very tight fit in the frame and then zip tied it directly to the frame. To hide the zip ties I ran them between the door edge molding and through the frame. I ended up having to cut two grills before I got the one i was satisfied with.

It helped that this was a spare grill that I picked up from Mark (Bluetribal) last year so I was not in a hurry to get it done and back on the truck and if i screwed it up I still had my original grill. I lost count of how many hours this took but it was probably around 30-40.

oof... 40 hours
just moved a few steps down my priority list! But it does look sharp. Nicely done.
