With the .64 hot side, it should boost early; 1200-1500rpm. I should be able to report back in in a week or so. I have evry part now, just a question of finding time around the holidays.

The 13BT/h55f was sold on Mud back in sept or so. I believe it is going in to an FJ40.

Update: She runs!
Picts to come, but she f***ing runs! And she runs well.
The only two leaks... the ebay special oil feed line, I just can't get to stop leaking. It's an AN4? fitting, and I'm at the point where I'm probably over tightening it, but I still get a little seep.
Then there's the ebay special fuel filter.
It looks like this:
Fuel Filter SVO WVO Biodiesel Diesel, Viton Seals Convert Used Fry Oil for fuel | eBay
I put a 10 Micron filter from Napa, #3166.
But the dang set up has 4 seals! And it just pukes fuel.
I decided to go simple and ordered a cheap Wix Filter head and Wix spin on wix filter from this site:
Wix & Napa Filters & Accessories: FleetFilter Secure Online Store
Their prices are nearly half what Napa is.
The base is #24309 ($25) and the filter (12 micron with water drain) is #33123 ($11). I like that they are a simple spin on with a single gasket, like an oil filter. Should be here in a couple days.

OK, so the Disco Potato. Wow... Just... wow. I have only driven it 10 miles or so, with a quick stint on the freeway. I have not tuned the pump, advanced timing, or installed the aneroid (it's on it's way); so it's all stock. But the response is superb. It builds boost at 1200rpm (well, i'm guessing... tach no workie), and it runs so cold I thought my Pyro was broken. EDIT: The Pyro was broken. Actual EGT at 65mph is 700F preturbo. On a good hill it will go to 1000F (at 12.5psi boost)
To give perspective, the 13BT I could get to 1300+ easily. And the 1HZ+T with turboglide in my HZJ79 will do the same.
I can't get over it. I almost had an accident staring at the Pyro. The boost is set to 12psi.
I'll report back when the filter shows up.

love the swap nice work very clean truck

just an idea

once you get some fuel into it if the exhaust temps are up you can port the wastegate. that turbo is very similar to the he351cw we use on dodges and on them the wastegate opening can be opened up considerably. look at the flapper and the size of the hole and you can see how much you can open it and still have 1/8 inch to seal on the outside... on the dodge it will drop the exhaust temp another 100f with alot of fuel as the turbo spools quick and the wastegate opens at 40psi with it shimmed... now its a different animal but the idea is the same... good luck great swap keep the pix coming....

Thanks. I'm really stoked on the Disco Potato. I'd like to know what the heck my Turboglide set up has that is so different, because it pales in comparison.

Hey Rob... any chance you have a fan shroud for an early (pre 2000?) HZJ73/5? The kind where the shroud bolts along the sides, like an FJ60 or FJ40?

If memory serves me what we use to do was use a 2F shroud and flip it 180. Otherwise John at Radd would be the one to answer that question.

Rob

RAYJON; interesting idea. As it is right now, it's cold. Eerily cold.

But I might try that trick with the Turboglide setup (which, I think is a Garrett, but not sure on the specs). Is that something folks can do with just die grinder and cutting stone? Or does it need to be machined?

Ahhh, Rob I keep getting confused with the RADD Cruisers screen name (and I've never met either of you guys, and you have single syllable names). Right, John owns it now, right?
Sorry.
I get confused easily. My head is full of malted hops and resin.
Yeah, the FJ40 shroud is my second choice.

Good to see, I am curious to see when you get your tach fixed about the turbo.

I get the two robs mixed up. As the original owner of radd was rob and there is someone who works at radd who is rob.
Confusing as hell as I have never met anyone.

Keep up the good work!

I'm been lazy on the photos. Still to come.
Have put about 200 miles on the 1HZ+T (HZJ74? HZJDP73? DiscoCruiser? Potato Cruiser?) and I had to get a doctor to remove my smile.

Feedback on the Disco Potato .64: Wow. Just... wow. Bare in mind I have a 1HDFT (intercooled, fuel turned up) an HZJ79 (Turboglide and fuel aneroid), and a Cummins Dodge (12-valve P-pump with fuel plante and 5" exhaust) and the Disco Potato puts them to shame. There is no boost lag. Period. And (now that I fixed the boost controller) it will hold full boost (set to 12psi) all day long (there are some long ass hills in CA). At 65mph the boost sits at about 6psi. Mash the throttle and it will move to the 12psi limit as fast as a gauge needle can move. Even pulling away from a stop sign in second gear will give boost right away. before I had the boost compensator dialed it, it push 15psi. But with a 1HZ, that I want to last, I dialed it back.
at 65mph, EGTs sit at about
EDIT: EGTs on the freeway are about 750-800F preturbo. On a hill they max at about 1000F at 12.5psi.

so... let's see: instant boost, low EGT, plenty of high-end boost, and no smoke. There's probably no such thing as a perfect turbo, but I'm not sure there's much room for improvement (well, with a stock motor I guess. I mean I suppose for a super hot-rod motor you'd need more. But dang this truck MOVES.)

Curious on what your getting boost and at what psi?

is it boosting as low as 1200rpm or lower?

I would love to see a break down of boost psi comparative to engine rpm

It boosts at or below 1200rpm. I mean, I'd say it boosts at 900rpm, but no one would believe me that it still has plenty of top end at 3000rpm.

Interesting

This sounds really appealing to me,
I am also curious to see what Wayne comes up with as well

Curious about your pump aneroid
What did you end up using? Do you have a hac or boost compensator on that pump

boost compensator and fuel aneroid are same/same.
No HAC on my pump.

The best deal is to get the aneroid from All American in Netherlands. For some reason, it's cheaper than buying from Japan direct.

roger!

what boost level are you getting at 1200rpm?

rpm doesn't dictate boost, load does.
you will find very little boost at 1200 in 1st but in 5th you will find higher boost readings...

Boost and EGT video:
video starts in 3rd gear @ 30mph, shifting through 4th to 5th up to about 70mph.
1HZ-T HZJ74 - YouTube

sorry if anyone gets carsick trying to watch. Holding camera and shifting...
