This sits on the inside of the firewall above the clutch pedal area...

Started working on my little box for the steering shaft...

When I mocked up the 80 series steering I noticed the angle for the old steering box was way off versus the firewall. So, third pic shows me guestimating what the angle is.. About 15 degrees...

Starting to box it all together.. Then all welded in....

Then ground down..

The heat from the grinder actually warped even the 14 gauge sheet a little so I had to carefully hammer back so sheet was closer to flat again... Second pic shows warping if you look closely.. It was worse than it looks in this pic actually...

Final product and that's it for tonight....

I forgot to take pic of one more hole-saw 2.5" hole I added under the hole for the vent for the wiring harness to pass through firewall..

Anyway, hopefully get this piece mounted in the body shortly! Almost done with the firewall now

andre,

interested in how the drivers side front vent is going to come out. I noticed some changes in the vent from my 69 to my 77. It seems to be a dummy vent in the 77.

when the firewall changed and they moved the brake master over the clutch master seemed to get in the way.

I am hoping that next winter when doing mine I can make the vent work with the later style brake/ clutch style.

On hot days my 72 floor board really gets toasty even with extra insulation. I bet in utah even more so.

I like your approach of "trying to get it right the first time". that makes lots of sense to me. I "finished" my fj45 over a year ago. and still making lots of corrections because of getting in a hurry.

Yes same here with my last 55.. Also because I didn't know better... It sure can get annoying not having a rig though with yours constantly under the knife.. That said, quoting Dozier, "the thrill of the build..." Which I am enjoying!

Anyway, more updated.. More or less... Got firewall done, finally!


Started with cutting a strip of steel to make the outer vent part.. This will make sense when done.. Second pic shows tracings of where vent should go...

Also on a side note, here is where I screwed up.. this should have been moved down about an inch as seen here.. But again I am pretty sure I should be able to fix this fairly easily..

Started bending strip for placement on the firewall piece...

I used that center punch there to get gradual bends..
