There's no way in hell that's gonna fit...Can a 285/75/17 fit in the spare tire area when deflated? I'm not opposed to using a ratchet strap around the tire if that will help.
It has to be deflated, I tried a worn down(20% tread left) 285 70 with 35 pis and it was a big no-goA deflated or even a worn 285/70 should fit.
That explains alot! When I crawled under mine with a tape measure there was only about 32" between the hitch and pan hard bar. My Coopers measure almost 33". I also sat on one of the tires before it was mounted on a rim to see how much I could squish it, and it barely moved. So that's why I got a roof rack.Oh yea, forgot to mention I removed that hitch too![]()
Do you notice while driving the tire being up on the roof? That explains alot! When I crawled under mine with a tape measure there was only about 32" between the hitch and pan hard bar. The roof basket added some mild wind noise. Its not really noticeable until interstate speeds or with the sunroof cover open. I think the tire actually quiets it down some by reducing vibration from the dozen or so horizontal bars. I would much rather have one of those SSS bumpers with a tire carrier, but I got the ROLA rack for $175 with free shipping.Do you notice while driving the tire being up on the roof?
How about a top heavy feeling around corners with the tire on the roof? The roof basket added some mild wind noise. Its not really noticeable until interstate speeds or with the sunroof cover open. A friend even helped me try to crush my 285/70/17s with a ratchet strap after letting the air out, and it was unsuccessful. I think the tire's 10 ply construction and reinforced side walls were the problem.
So, what type of rear tire carrier do you plan to use? I don't want to replace either my front or rear bumpers, but I DO have a need for a 285 tire carrier of some sort (put it on the roof, and didn't like it, and it won't go underneath. Only other solution is to put it inside, but I'd rather have it on the rear.I've decided to use a rear tire carrier because I definitely want to run a 285/75/17. And I am going to utilize the AEV Fuel Caddy, so I won't need to mount fuel in the spare tire well. .
AEV Fuel Caddy for rear tire carrier
I plan on using the space near the front driveshaft for a 2 gallon VIAIR Air tank,
Air tank mounted underbody(not in spare tire area)
So this leaves that space open for maybe propane, heated water storage?
Has anyone considered using that area for propane tank storage? I would definitely run a thick skid plate over the area connecting to the rear bumper. Maybe this is not a good place in case of a rear end collision?
I found this propane mount that looks good.
