Big fat 80....Michelin XLs?

Well, I just got the slee 6" springs ordered, will be here next week, probably not in time for Cullowhee. I wish they would make it, I could use the ride quality improvement (the Cado SWAAAAAAAAAYS in the wind right now).

I will be ordering the XLs this week as well. I got the rear non-locker third member, poly rears, and an aussie locker in so the rear will be sorted out soon. Now I just need to get the longfield super set for the front...will wait for March for that one...whoof.

I thought about the 4" springs, but with how big the Cado is and the weight that I carry the 6" seems to be the right choice. I have a TON of stuff on and in that truck.

Not to mention I just wanted that much more clearance! :)

I didn't read through all the other posts................. so this might no event matter but all that comes to mind is

TIPPY....... that tall and narrow, you are going to learn to love the roll over

Thats why I'm stayin with the 4", but dan will probably be closer to 5" with the fat ass of the cado. Once we both get them on we'll see how much difference all that weight makes, I'm one light 80.

yeah, I talked it over with slee and ben out in CO (they know the truck well from the PO). They feel the 6" spring will actually improve my handling on and off road from what I have now. The tire will be the limiting factor so I will be careful. The footprint I have now won't change, the height will change a total of about 5" up (including tire) from where I am now.

If the tires make me tippy, I will swap them out for wider 37s or 38s.

Eric, i have actually been to piedmont truck tires with my truck asking about michelins and the guy said he couldn't get them.

I wonder if certain vendors have discontinued them. I just checked Michelin's website and could not find them in the tire selector. Looks like they might be going to just the XZL's. I'll call some of the others and check.

I forgot to put this in the PM, the odds are that these tires are built off a truck tire carcass, which means steel cords, which means HEAVY, but should be very durable. That also explains why they don't bulge much with minimal air pressure and the load you're talking about. Hope this helps. I'd be curious as to how much they slow your cruiser down once they're on there.

Logan when you get up to VaTech your gonna need something good for mud. That's about all there is to play with up there. If you like the XL's that's cool, but keep you a set of swampers mounted up. Va doesn't have clay like we do.

My ideal would be a tire with minimal to no bulge at 5-10 psi with little risk of throwing a bead. This would let the tire deform when I hit an obstacle, they are literally bulletproof, and I think my 1FZE with 4.88s can spin them.

I will have my rear end sorted out Monday. I will have Longfields by mid-March, and I should have these tires on by the beginning of March, brand new set.

I will report back what I think, and if they are too squirrely, I can sell them pretty easily to get Iroks when the time comes.

What are you talking about? Crozet is about 30 minutes away. Hatfield-McCoy area is about 45-60mins away, and plenty of ;cough:illegal:cough:junk near by. I will always and forever hate mud, no matter where I am. But some swampers will happen eventually, these XLs will just be good cheap testers to get my suspension and axles setup how I need them for some 38x13 TSLs or 38.5x11 boggers.

Dan, you're gonna be way ahead of me in the "spinning" though. At least until I can get the 5.29s and those rockhoppers (WAY down the road for those).

yeah your right.....I just lived there for 28 years and I go up there once a month. I obviously have no idea of the surroundings....forget I said anything....

check with Steve FJ40Z on Hatfield-McCoy....90% of that is ATV area. so if you plan on going to Crozet every time, then have fun.

I will most likely go to 5.29s and rockhoppers in the 80 unless I go portals. Time will tell. I am kind of experimenting with the XLs too. If my truck holds up with the new lift, everything runs well, and I like the performance, I won't go portals. If I find something I don't...well, Volvo here I come! :)

well, Volvo here I come! :)

Should I and the rest of the mudders that work at Volvo hide? :D

We've been asking around the office on how to get our hands on some portals as well. No luck yet, but I'll let you know if we do.

oooh, fresh volvos would be the bee's knees! :)

Hey Logan,

You order your XLs yet? The dude wants payment in money order or postal wire. I always freak out with this kinda crap. I wanna paypal him or something but he is concerned with "Uncle Sam" taking a bite. I am assuming he has a business and doesn't want to cash a check and show it as income, etc.

Wondered if you got a similar story. I am holding off shipping him money cause I like to deal straight up and never under the table, especially when I am tossing $800 bills around.

Let me know...

Be VERY careful!

If it was me, I'd pay a little more elsewhere so you don't have to lose sleep while they ship to you... or not ship?

Or just call his bluff and say you won't do it that way. If he's really in business, he'll sell em.

If he get's away with this with too many customers, I'm sure he's worked out a nice money losing business so Uncle Sam won't take anything anyway.

That is what I am doing, calling it out. I have seen too many money wire/transfer deals go south with no evidence or trace available aside from the money going.

I am asking him to be more upfront, write up a bill of sale, sign it, fax or send it, and let's make this official and on paper. If he can't handle it, I can't do business and shake hands, walk away.
