Hey Guys,

I was hoping somebody could point me to the right place for this.

So, I finally got my 5 year old baby girl her own snowboard and gear and want to take her to go learn on it.

I am thinking though it is kinda silly right now to pay full price for a ticket for me (she is free) as my whole day will be spent with her most likely teaching her basics. Any small snow hill would do the trick really.

Is there any sledding spots someone could point me to with a small hill that I could take her to do a few turns and learn? I really don't want to spend a ton of money to just get her started. Once she is making turns or at least moving a bit we will hit the resorts. I am in Carlsbad and big bear area would probably be the best location.

Thanks!

Noah

Noah,
When I taught my daughter how to snowboard, I took her to Snow Summit and walked her up the hill instead of buying a lift ticket. The area furthest to the right is always open and away from everyone.

I did it politely, the only time they ever check anything is when you are going on the lift. Never had any issues.

I did the same thing with my wife when I was trying to teach her to snow board. We went over to Bear Mtn. and just walked up onto the bunny slopes about 100ft or so and coasted down. We did that for a few hours until she was able to carve down all on her own. She ended up hating it and I never took her again. A five year would probably love it though. Nobody questioned me when I was just walking up a coasting back down with her.

If you are on the main road to Bear Mt. and continue past the entry to main lodge/resort (Mt. is on your left), the road continues a ways to provide access to homes on the right. Stay on the road past the homes and you will find a cool 'non-offical' sledding area. It can get a bit crowded sometime but usually not too bad. Sledding is great, but it is within the trees, not a big open area.

come to think of it most ski resorts are on public lands that are leased to the resort, and it is called a "lift" ticket, so if you are not taking the "lift" then I would guess you have every right to be there. NO?

Not always. Been taking our scout troop to Snow Valley for years. Off and on they check for lift tickets as you walked thru the fences to get to the lifts. Was spotty with that though. It's a little closer to Running Springs if you come up that way.

Snow Valley is smaller than Snow Summit, like you said they only check when going to the lift area. There are areas that you can practice snow boarding without getting on a lift. All the years that I've been there with my daughter no issue at all. But not guaranteeing anything. Worse case you can just purchase her a snow boarding lesson for a couple of hours while you go get some drinks and enjoy the view.

You can not do this at the Bunny slopes at the far left of Snow Summit. The key mentioned above was the far right of SS where nobody is at because it's soo damn flat.
My wife and I have gone for Christmas two of the last three years and they stopped the parents from helping and my wife, myself and brother-in-law had to help them since we had passes. The kids don't pay but they must be with a paying adult.

So do you take her on the lift? Awesome that she loves it. Can't wait to hit the slope with my kids again.
