looks like all the campsites in the SB national forest are closed through May 31st? looks like a permit issue? anyone have any tips on where the hell to camp up there?

Well you could always sleep in the truck on the trail, cook on the tail gate, and "wing" it. That's what one of my co-workers does when he goes up there. I'm kind of surprised he hasn't been cited for it yet come to think of it...
I thought the camping season didn't start up there until memorial day weekend anyways? Looking at the forest service websites it looks like most of the SoCal camp grounds are closed. Both state and federal. You could always find some BLM areas and camp there. Hell you could even practice shoot shotguns at that point.

I thought about yellow post, I am thinking we just wing it, no sleeping in the truck, taking the 40! , got a sweet little one man tent though that is super cumfy. Normally I like to be able to make a fire, etc when I camp, we will see. Just thinking that the YP sites will be packed with none of the campgrounds open? I think they are usually open this time of year, like I mentioned it seems from what I found it is a permit issue.

San Bernardino National Forest - Holcomb Valley Campground
looks like most of them are closed, except for holcomb, season should start April 29th so something must be going on? plan to call tomm to the discovery center to see what is up. Will report back.

Yeah, I was just up this past weekend and I can confirm Holcomb was open.
I managed to reserve a group site for memorial day weekend. But that was back in January. Most of the regular sites were unavailable. There was one other group site available at the time. I heard it has something to do with the concessionaire contracts. They're re-doing them or something like that and expected them to open in June.

As long as the forest is open; "Big White Gates" are open, then I like using the Yellow Post - primative camp spots!
They close a bunch during the winter. And I know they recently shut Serrano on Jan 1 because of budget issues.
I prefer to stay at the Yellow Post sites anyway. You can have fires at the Yellow posts, you just need to swing by the BB Discovery center and get a fire permit. The Discovery center also has a list of all the sites. I have a list here somewhere, I will see if I can scan it and send it to you.

calling it off, we may reschedule for june if it is not too hot

Depending on the weekend in June I might be able to make it.
