New GX owner here. I absolutely love this car, but it obviously lacks a convenient wireless charging station.

Doc has me on steroids that wire me out and keep me up at night. While I was up most of last night, my engineering side came up with a really clean solution for a wireless charging station that could be a viable commercial product. As it turns out, my son-in-law does design/fabrication via 3D printing and is looking for a product idea to take to market. He will be all over this when I propose it to him. If it goes anywhere, I will post updates here.

Also last night, my Ohio hillbilly side came up with a few less elegant ideas. I plan on trying them out and will post updates on that as well. This will definitely happen because a fleet of Amazon trucks are currently preparing for a mass package drop at my house. The end result will likely be a disaster, but should at least provide some humor.

You'll have to post some pic's when you get it up and running.
I too am an engineer, but will go duct tape, baling wire and zip ties sometimes too, usually just for proof of concept then I'll do it right.

I just want a wireless charging pad I can lay my phone on. When you slide that door open where the USB ports are there is just a useless pit to the left. It looks like a tomb where junk goes to die and never be seen lol.

The easy solution is to plug in charging pad and lay it on the closed lid. The only thing I'm not sure of is if you can leave the USB cable plugged in and close that lid. It looks to me that you can't. But I bought a charging pad and I will see what happens. If that works I'm satisfied and done.

IF that doesn't work then my thought was to design a plate of sorts that snaps into/onto the top of that mess. The plate would provide a flat area to hold the charging pad and a clean look. It could be designed to accommodate and integrate with a specific pad to look "factory" or just be more generic and work with any pad. You would leave the sliding door open to the back and this is what you would see instead.

The other thought was using one of those MagSafe holder chargers like other have mounted in various places (I do have an iPhone). But I haven't seen a mounting location that I'm crazy about. So I am going to experiment on that front a bit to see if I can find a mounting solution I like better. That's where the hillbilly engineering is going to come into play. I already have an idea or two to try out.

Bottom line is I'm off work for the holidays and wired out on steroids that my doc prescribed. So, I need something to do anyway.

So I have my solution. It was the easy solution where I just bought a pad and sat it on the lid. As it turns out you can 't plug a cable in the USB port and close the lid because it hits, as I suspected it might. The easy fix there was to buy a low-profile USB cigarette adapter. The one I bought provides a USB A and USB C port which is nice because there is no USB C normally. Now you can plug the USB A cabke into the adapter and close the lid. The other nice thing about the adapter is that it has a LED light showing when it is powered. This verified that the 12V power port is switched with the ignition, so nothing is draining when the vehicle is off.

The pad I bought is slightly "tacky" on the back. It remains to be seen how well it stays put while driving. I suspect that with my "old man" driving style this won't be a problem lol. Likewise, the top of the pad is a grippy rubber that should allow my phone to stay put. Again, this remains to be seen but I don't anticipate any issues with my driving style and the fact that this is strictly on the street.

These crappy pics show the final solution that meets my simple goal of a basic charging pad. I didn't like the white, so I took a sharpie and blacked that out.

Links provided to the charging pad and 12V USB adapter I used in case anyone is interested.

Tried figuring this out for a while, but I found my resolve. A double-jointed RAM mount, with a heavy duty magnet on the end & a 3M magnet inside my phone case. Super easy put on/remove, and this thing holds damn well. You can tighten the joints with knobs, and loosen to adjust the direction of your liking. Perfectly out of the way of my drive sight, but right where I need to see my screen. My USB cable goes over or under my wheel for now, I’ll find a better solution for that soon.

Looks good. If you don't mind me asking, why do you need to see your phone while driving? Are you using google maps or something?

I bought a similar gizmo to experiment with mounting options. Then I realized I don't need to see my phone while driving. I just wanted a charging pad.

I use Google maps fairly frequently. I’d like to see my phone without looking away from the road.

New one.

I bought this and plan to run it with an x grip mount. Charging cable will run up under the dash for a clean install…in theory.

The magnetic vent clip does not work well with these new larger iPhones. 15 pro max. I went on a road trip to Austin and it kept falling down unless I had it at a 45 degree angle, which makes it useless for navigating. Off pavement would be even worse.

I have a ‘23 w CarPlay, so I don’t even use it for maps. I like to have my phone at eye level as my GX is my office essentially, I cover a territory for work and get emails, texts, phone calls, FaceTimes throughout the day. It lights up with any simple notification, and I can see it automatically bc my face unlocks it. But also perfectly stays away from my drivesight.

What is the charging power of this charging pad? How long does it take to charge a mobile phone? If it charges quickly, I probably won't care what it looks like.

I'd be nice if it had wireless charging.

The pad I used and linked in my post charges at max rate. This is due to using the 12V power adapter also linked in my post. The combination gets the job done.

I am happy with just the charging pad because i don't need to see the screen when I'm driving. Just needed a charging pad to plop my phone on.

So far I'm very happy with this combo. I did sharpie the white lettering. The pad and phone have stayed put just fine for on road driving.

I've used X grips with my ram mounts for a long time, both in my trucks and Polaris Ranger. As I posted on the previous page in the GX

The X grip on the left for my phone I stripped a wireless charging plate and JB Welded it to the mount after removing the RAM emblem on the X grip. Worked great for a few years but eventually stopped working. And it is not coming off the X grip, JB Weld may not be Belzona but it is darn close LOL. Still works as a phone holder but not for wireless charging.

After enough years of using X grips they are second nature to me. However still sometimes are a PITA and I miss the old mag mounts for quick throw and go.

Couple of weeks ago ordered a Peak Design 1" charging ball mount and Samsung S23 Ultra case for my phone. It holds well although haven't been off road with it, but seems secure enough. So yesterday I ordered the locking non charging universal mount for the Moto G that runs Fusion off obdlink MX+. I don't keep the Moto G in the truck in the winter, charging a phone when the phone is below freezing is not a good thing. The S23U always stays with me so not an issue. At teens below zero the crystals in the Garmin will freeze and the display won't work until it warms up enough with the heat on. It stays in my vehicle all year.

During the summer I will use the charging cable for the Moto G and just leave it plugged in and in the rig and power the phone on and off when I want to monitor vehicle parameters. Which is always.

Peak Design has a case for the iPhone 15 Pro Max and has a Military discount if you qualify. The size and weight of the S23U and 15 Pro are similar if I am not mistaken, S23U may be even heavier. So far I am pleased with the Peak Design phone mount system. As well as the Gamiviti mount.

I have an X-grip on my mountain bike and the ball grip always lets my phone dip/drop/droop down, doesn't keep it in the orientation I set it.
Albeit, I'm riding on a bumpy beach trail, but I'm not doing jumps, ruts or rocks and the trail is hard pack and flat.
Maybe it's just that the X-grip is about 20 years old and need a new one?

Yeah they are spring loaded and would assume they wear out over time, although mine haven't. Then again they are only 10-12 years old at least most of them. One is only a year or so old.

If all goes according to plan I will have at least 3 X-grips that I will no longer need. Remind me in a PM in a month or so when I know for sure and would be glad to send you one. I'm trying to be less of a pack rat the last couple of years LOL.

I've used this in just about every car. It's a small form factor, the magnets are really strong and it's cheap. I keep the metal piece in my phone case so it's a quick connection.
