my recommendation is to use 1 1/2 or 3" rigid foam cut to fit between the studs you put in the wall. You can use fiberglass, but make sure you seal up the concrete walls first really really good.

as for making sure the walls are sealed I have to dig out the house on the walls that are underground to seal those. Since winter has shown up that will have to wait till spring. So i am going to start on the side thats above ground. I was thinking on using the spray foam to make a vapor barrier then using fiberglass in the walls. I dont know if I need to seal the wall on the inside before i put the spray foam on it.

I was referring to sealer on the inside.

You can check unpainted concrete walls for vapor by taping a square of plastic to inside of wall... Tape all edges really good. Wait a week if moisture pops up, you need to do something.

I have used the drylock product you can get from Lowes or HD to paint inside of walls and works great.

IF YOU HAVE WATER entering the basement, you have to do outside work!!!!

When you say spray foam, what are you referring to?

For vapor barrier, the question I have is based on where you live, do you put barrier on inside or outside of insulation. Here in KC we do on the inside usually.

What type of wall do you have concrete or concrete block?

The side I am starting on is dry for sure. I know for a fact I have to dig out the front of the house to seal the wall and put in drains to take it away from the house. dreading but thats what has to be done.

The spray foam I am talking about is the type that E Butler puts in. Sprays a layer of foam 1" tick for a barrier. here is a example from a website Foam it Green DIY Spray Foam Insulation Kits

I have poured 10" thick concrete walls

Here is a pic of the back of the house. I am starting on the end where the left door is over to where the ac unit sits.

Sorry EC for whoring up the thread :p

Sorry you have to dig it out. No fun at all. Last time I used a small mini excavator, and worked good to dig something like that. It was fun though.

Why not fill it up with spray foam? fiberglass is designed to take up full cavity (trapping air) so if you compress, it will not perform the same.

If your gonna spray foam then Mr Butler is your man.. Club member and does it for a living..
Far as What I did..

2" XPS foam and furring strips. Outside drainage was addressed prior to any start.
REgular batt insulation in ceiling. Thus far have not gotten to the "craft" room part. But do plan on putting a return air vent to draw air across that room.

It not that i wont enjoy it but I still work out of town and I would have to spend my vacation time doing it which is wheeling time :( Only reason I'm starting before the exterier is done is My wife has been doing laundry in the basement and its "Dark and Dirty" so she is getting her a nice laundry room and a bathroom. When we have big cook outs people go thru her clean kitchen with their shoes on to go to the bathroom.

Cost would be too much to fill the cavity with foam and if i have to get in the wall to work on water pipes I would probably be pissed that i have to cut it out lol. I would have Eric to it but 1200 miles might be a little farther than his range.

Got any good beer down there? You might be able to intice him?

no but if you do a google search for moonshie capital of the world you will find out where I live.

primer on the walls! FINALLY.. Gotta trim out the primer still.. Ran out of paint..
Jenn's gonna pick out colors soon.. LONG PROCESS but i'm getting there..
Colin is going to help me with tile.. Well, let me re-phrase that.. Colin is going to tell me what to do and I will listen and learn..
PIctures after Jenn pics colors and I have color on the walls..

MANY thanks to all of those that have helped out.. Soon as I'm done with this project it's back to Cruiser world. Hoping to time it with Kelly's triumphant return after tax season..

Ha.... Congrats on the primer. That is always my favorite time as the drywall dust stops being an issue.

Look forward to seeing the place and testing the throne.

Couldn't sleep last night, so went out in the shop and worked on the back seats. Got some excercise on the way out..... had a good run through the neighborhood chasing a skunk with my 12 gauge... never got a clear shot. YET I DIGRESS

<<<This is where I start heckling you again>>>>

Is is funnier that you have a longer build thread on your basement remodel, then on your 45 build.... or thatt you actually HAVE a build thread for your basement and DON'T for your actual 45 build?

just saying......

<<<the heckling has ended, please continue whatever you were doing>>>

WOW... 2 hours and no reply.

Maybe I'm getting to ya...... heckle

He's sick today. Hours of huffing drywall dust & drinking a gallon of Milk Stout will do that to you. :) But seriously, he's really not feeling well at all today so is at home.

Maybe the 45 thread will have pictures too.

Fine... I will start this.

Here is what it looked like last time I saw it.

I do appreciate the gentle persuasion..

I mean well and I know you are "focused" on getting the basement finished. The point is that when you start back on the 45, we are interested to be part of it by seeing your progress. I know seeing others hard work motivates me to get some done on my project. :wrench:

If it makes you feel better, I can sign my artwork, such that you can frame it.... :p

Frame it and mount it in the bathroom!
