For what it's worth, I'm looking for a few good men who would be interested in importing Bandis's to the U.S.. I've started anther post to see what we can come up with. The post is under FJ45 4door pics

Thanks,

Ready

you don't need to pay 25% tariff. It's like 2 or 5%...I forget. I've never paid 25%. If they make you, get a better customs broker.

I think it is more like 24% if I remember. I paid that amount when I brought my FJ45 LWB over through the Sweetgrass, MT crossing. Prior to my importing, I contacted a senior representative for the Department of Commerce in D.C. who regulates the commodities classes for tariffs, primarily for two reasons. One to see if there was a loophole to take advantage for NAFTA exemption (there wasn't) and second to confirm the commodities class.

For the FJ45 LWB, the commodities class was something along the lines of a non-passenger vehicle with #### gross vehicle weight. Tariff = 24%.

Jsaltlick, if you got around paying the higher tariff, good for you. Sounds like a customs official looked at the lower amount. I actually have the print out from the D.C. rep showing the commodities class with all of my other importation paperwork.

If you are bringing it in for personal use than there is no way its a above 5% max. If I get time at the office this week I will copy the regs and the tariff amount.

I asked about that because it was under the commercial section. The Commerce rep said it didn't matter because it was considered a 1ton truck and therefore did not qualify as a passenger vehicle.

if we get enough bandeirante's imported....maybe there can be a bandeirante Forum here on mud and my bandeirante threads can be put to good use :)

The 1st person to buy one here on mud gets my supply of Bandeirante owners manuals and mb engine manuals that i have in PDF :)

I have done some researching and there are many newer Double Cabin with 4 doors (Pick up cabine dupla, ano 2000/2000) the problem is they are too new and they are not cheap. I have seen some older ones but they do not seem to be as numerous and then there is finding the right one etc. The other problem is they all have the Mercedes diesel motor, which I personally have no interest in. I guess you could pull the engine and swap it, but that is more money. Obviously, as mentioned by someone above, if it were easy, someone would have figured out how to do this before. My cousin who lives in Indonesia told me there are many cruisers there but they are RHD so that is no good. Here are some pics. The first white truck is actually a 2000 model and the others are similar and very expensive after conversion and prior to even getting them out of the country. :frown:

A small issue most people over look, is that you have to own a vehicle for three years before you can export it for personal use. Just a heads up!

Is this a Brazillian rule?

Ok, here is one I have found. 1988, Longo as they call it, not a 4 door, but a start. MB diesel, biggest thing is LHD. Problem is, the asking price is equivalent of $17,000.00 US dollars. That is before shipping, taxes, etc. From what I can tell, vehicles cost a lot more in Brazil than in AU for example. :frown: So what would you guys think this is worth here in the states? I don't know the km/miles yet, but condition looks excellent.

First thing. 1988 would require a registered importer. Too new. Or you could wait till 2013 and then you can import it yourself.

Second. It isn't that vehicles cost a lot more in Brazil than AUS, it is the exchange rate that plays a major role. Exchanging your dollars for Reals requires that there is a strong market of Brazilians wanting to exchange their Reals for your dollars. A more favorable exchange occurs when a greater demand for dollars exists.

Not really a rule, more of a law. My parents were shipping via container a butt load of stuff they had collected over the past 25 years and my father (a cruiserhead) looked into bringing a Bandi over. Its easy really (the 25 year law and the rest) but the only kink was the 3 year ownership.
