Just bought aftermarket struts for the hood on my '92 model. These struts require that the OEM ball studs that screw into the hood be re-used and inserted into the new lift strut. The problem is that the old ball studs will not come out of the sockets of the old lift struts.

Has anyone else encountered the same problem? I am thinking I will have to order new ball studs. Anyone happen to know a part number or size?

Is the old ball stud removable and I am just missing the obvious?

i would think it just unscrews off the rod but you may need to really exert some force on it. based on working with many gas springs for other mechanical projects. hth

One of my replacements was missing the ball, fell out during shipping.

To get the ball out of the old shock, I cut the socket with a dremel until it split. The shock was bad anyway, so I wasn't ruining anything that wasn't already garbage. The old ball stud snapped into the new shock just fine.

I had the same thing happen and this is what I did as well. A bit of a PITA, but it worked :)

When I replaced my struts, I "test fit" the ball stud before mounting it. I couldn't get it back out. Fortunately I was able to get it mounted with an open end wrench. If they come back out, I didn't figure out how to make it happen.
