So I e-mailed my buddy who pits for Mast Craft, "How was Felipe?"
So here is the story!!!
Hummmm.....$h!tty but ok.
I don't know if you heard about the crash? Well Robbie destroyed the truck at the Laughlin race. So the truck went back to Jimco to be refabricated. Then back to Mirage to be rebuilt. Two months of 12 hour days, 7 days a week the truck is done 1 day before they leave for SF. 1 day of testing at Plaster City and some more testing in SF. Thursday before the race the truck is a effing ROCKET. new motor, new suspension, new truck. Park the truck Thursday night ready to go. Get up Friday morning and it won't start. Pull a spark plug out and water pours out of the cylinder. Send the Helo to SD to pick up parts. Start tearing the motor down, cracked head can't fix it. So now we look to the "old" truck (now used as a prerunner). The little truck has been neglected back. They figured it had about 4000 miles on it since it's last prep (truck are usually completely torn down after every race/prerun). So we tear the truck down to almost the cage. This thing was tired!! Cracked chassis, broken axles, broken spindle, lights not working, hadn't passed tech in over a year....etc. So we (10+ people) work on it all day and night (day before the race). at around 11:00 at night we get it done. Well the best we could with the parts we had. at this point all Robbie wants is a top 10 finish. The top 10 finishers are the top 10 starters at the 500. We wake up at the crack of dawn Saturday and get the chase trucks organized and ready to go. 8am all trucks are off to our assignments. Robbie leaves the line about 10am. He starts off in 4th. So he's doing all he can to keep up with the big boys. At race mile 69 he breaks a ball joint on the upper a-arm. We don't have any extra ball joints. We find some old ball joint parts in the box van at my pit (RM 110). They send the helo to us for parts. Helo lands, we fill it with gas and off he goes. 2 hours later the truck is running. By this time 9 TT's have pasted us (and 1 class 11). We called Robbie and told him he is in 10th place, just finish the race. He gets to our pit, we fuel him and give it a once over. A little smack in the ass and off he goes. Now we pack up and head to the finish.........About 3 hours later he's getting close to the end. We hear him on the radio. Everyone's getting excited. Then he breaks a heim on the steering. He's about 3-4 miles from the finish. Of course we don't have parts for the little truck. Another chase truck was close by. After a little welding and stuff he's back on the trail. About 10 minutes later he cross's the finish line. Oh yea, in 8th place!!!!
So it was a hell of a few days but we managed to get the top 10. A little sun shine on a s***ty and expensive week for Mastercraft Racing.
