Thought I'd give you guys a heads up...
Sunday afternoon my girlfriend's 01 Subaru Outback wouldn't start. It has the 3L H6 in it and 113K on the clock and in pretty good shape.

I went down to take a look. It cranks fine. I shot some ether up the intake to see if it would catch, dumped some fuel in the tank in case the gas gauge was stuck, etc. I don't know the first thing about subarus - couldn't even find the dizzy or reach the spark plugs to check for spark. Though I didn't have much time to look either.

So she had it towed to Ed's Automotive on Nevada - a shop she's used for years and was pretty comfortable with. The guys there told her that she had a broken timing chain and the engine was trashed. When she pressed them for options, they offered to give her $200 to $300 for the car!

I thought this sounded suspicious - timing chain going out at 113K, no strange noises from the engine the last time it ran, or when we cranked it. Cranked normally, as opposed to cranking with no compression on half the engine (has two timing chains, one for each side). The last bit - offering to buy it for essentially the scrap metal price - definitely pegged my BS meter.

So I went down with her to talk to them yesterday afternoon. Ed wasn't there, so we talked to the guy that did the "diagnosis". Asked how he came to the conclusion that the timing chain had broken - he said he "just listened to it" with a stethescope and could tell that "nothing was turning in there". I asked about the lack of suspicious noise, cranking, etc and was told that "they don't always do that". Asked how much it would cost to fix it - he claimed that "nobody in town would touch that engine". Only option was a new engine at a cost of $10K. I asked about labor on installing a used engine and was told $5K or $6K.

So we stepped outside to talk about options a bit and I did a quick search for subaru shops and found one up the road - Import Speciality Automotive on Boulder. Drove over there to talk to them. The guy we talked to was also very sceptical - he would charge on the order of $70 to $100 to disassemble enough to confirm a timing chain problem and would expect some noise or cranking difference, etc. And if it was a bad timing chain, he estimated the repair at $1K to $2K depending on the amount of damage. Also scoffed at the $300 offer, claiming it was worth at least $1K even with a bad engine.

We decided that a 2nd opinion was in order and had the car towed from Ed's to ISA.

Got the diagnosis back today ... wait for it ... wait for it

The engine was flooded.

Now it's still an open question as to why that happened. I'm wondering if there is some intermittent spark problem that caused the no-start, and she flooded it with all the cranking. But it's a long way between flooded and a broken timing chain.

Wow, stories like this make me sick to my stomach. Some people are beyond belief. You should post up that info on Google reviews as well as any other review site that get traffic.

That's one thing I miss about MO. I had a great mechanic that I really trusted.

Good luck diagnosing the flooded engine.

That sucks. I would also like to mention to stay away from the Toyota dealership on powers and woodmen. They did some crap to a friend of mines wife and even had a yelling match with her while she was alone and had her twins with. Needless to say he went down there and got involved and recorded everything on his I-phone. He has them saying they don't care about customers and they will f over one whenever they get a chance. Just giving you guy's a heads up.

Been there, done that with the northside Toyota dealer. Ugh.

Let me add another. New Bill's Alignment. They had excellent reviews on the internet. Supposedly THE place to go for an alignment. The place was absolutely filthy inside (wipe your shoes on the way OUT the door). I asked them to check the alignment on my 80 series, instructing them that I was particularly interested in my caster numbers and toe.

30 minutes later the fella gave me a several hundred dollar estimate for a new front track bar and to repack the front wheel bearings. I asked why I supposedly needed a new track bar, and the guy told me that it was "worn out". I inquired about just replacing the bushings and got a bunch of hemming and hawing. I happened to have just checked my wheel bearings for play about two weeks prior and knew they were good and snug. I had also inspected the front "track bar" bushings recently and knew they were fine. I reinspected everything again when I got home and confirmed what I already knew.

But what about my numbers on the alignment? Guy said "they were fine..." [crickets] So I asked for a print out. 15 minutes later he comes back with a print-out that shows some random numbers. "Oh, sorry, we had to reboot the alignment machine, and it took a few minutes to bring your numbers back up." The printout showed "before" and "after" alignment numbers. My caster numbers (non-adjustable) were dramatically different between before and after. I asked the guy what was up with that. He said "Oh, they turn the wheels back and forth during the alignment, and when they do the caster changes. That's all that is."

He didn't charge me for the alignment check, but he looked very nervous that I was about to come over the counter at him as I collected my key.

On a positive note, Rex Tire has been the pinnacle of customer service every time I have been in there. No affiliation, they just plain rock.

Crooks everywhere, that sucks. Glad you didn't get taken Eric.

Thats funny - I was telling this story to a guy at work and he gave me a rave review of his recent experience at that alignment shop

Mr. G,
If it flooded as bad as the link you posted, you may want to change the oil as in the gas is washing off the main/rod bearings for you, don't want to end up with a knock. And an 01' Subaru with 113K is worth way more than $1000, even with a broken engine.

Interesting for sure, now I'm going to be on the lookout for Subaru's with broken timing chains.

Yep, was due for an oil change anyway

I have been happy with Jack's alignment on Fillmore. Got the recommendation off here.

Had struts replaced on 2001 Subaru and aligned, very reasonable. While picking up the car I told him I thought I had a caster issue on the LX and described the problem. He said I didn't based on the symptoms but to bring it by and he would check. Several weeks later I took it in and sure enough it was in spec, no cost. He'll have my business again.

My boss purchased a new 2013 Tacoma from the South Dealership this year. He had issues getting it to consistantly shift into 4wd. He had it into the dealership probably 15 times over 6 months, which is NOT AN EXAGGERATION. They kept telling him there was no problem, but there was. He even got the regional manager involved, and drove him around for 4 hours and was unfortunately unable to reproduce the issue he had.

He was absolutely furious and was going to pursue legal action. He had probably 20 videos on his iphone of the 4wd indicator blinking at him in every conceivable road condition but the dealership told him there was nothing wrong and that he must be shifting incorrectly (it's a dial on the dashboard...)

He finally went to the north store and they called him right back and told him that the actuator for the front diff was bad and it would be fixed in a day.

Just like everything, your mileage may vary...

I found out the mechanic at the garage I take all my vehicles to drinks a lot. He's always leaving beer cans in my jeep and greasy fingerprints everywhere. He test drove my red truck and now there's a big dent in the bed like a tree fell on it. Then he invites his friends over and they put FNJeep stickers everywhere thinking its funny.
I'm looking for a new place, but nobody seems to match his quality of work.

:D

Keep in mind gentlemen that I am Head Service Advisor/ Asst. Manager at the Sears Auto Center on Southgate now. I'm not saying my shop is the best around but we do pretty good when it comes to preventative maintenance and minor repairs. I'll get the club guys a good deal. Sorry to hear what happened Eric, good thing your BS Radar was turned on!

Greg,

That is a nice offer. Thanks for keeping the club in mind.

p.s. I might be talking to you about a Die Hard platinum ;)

Yeah, thanks Greg. Will have to keep you guys in mind!

Leon, shouldn't you wait to see if the 100 series you buy doesn't already have a Die Hard in it? ;)

I here too many stories like this. It is very hard to find an honest person nowadays. I have learned to do almost everything my self now. That way if something gets screwed up I only have my self to blame.

Sad, just sad.

Have had real honest experience with Sabaru on 14th and cimmarron. Dealer said my moms head gaskets were going so took it there for a 2nd opinion. they said its really nothing to worry about too much, its a subaru thing., drive it another 100k.

I'll put in a good word for Don Otto of Bear Automotive in Colorado Springs. In my experience he is a good honest mechanic. Don knows land cruisers and has built his own FJ40 in the past.

I had a neighbor tell me that Aspen Auto on Tutt was a good place. I had them replace a timing belt on my Accord. It took them 4 days to do it. After I dropped it off they started on calling me trying to get me to replace just about everything on the car. I get the car back and it has a whirring noise when the engine is running. They take it back and then tell me the bearings on the PS pump are shot. When I ask them why it wasn't making the noise when I brought it in, I get told that the belt tension was probably too loose "it is very difficult to get those belts properly tensioned" Wow! I didn't know that they required auto mechanics to have special powers. I did the call around town and price the job after the fact and figure I paid them a 50% premium over other shops. The PS pump still whirrs and will until it dies. I am not ever going back to them.
