That 55 is CLEAN! If it were me, I'd boat anchor that V8 and put a turbo diesel in.;)

Thinking about it. Thought about it quiet a bit actually. Means moving the gearbox forward i think as there is a large bell housing adapter hanging of the SBC to mate to the 60series box.
Now only if i could find someone who wants swap me a turbo diesel:)

So today I brought a Tee Kay Head Check Kit.
Ive never used this kit or anything like it b4, however my neighbor has & he hung over the fence & watched me do it.
The test fluid did not change colour.
I am not getting combustion gas into the radiator.
I then was asked to do a compression test & this is what I found.
140,130,145,140,140,130,145,140
I squirted some oil down both low pots and they both came up.
Funny, its 2 & 6 that have the lowest comp (my bone white plugs)
Heres the catch. Ive driven around all this week without the brake booster connected. When i pulled all my spark plugs they all almost had the same colour ! Very lite grey/white. All dry. = Lean motor. So even though the brake booster draw from 2&8, it created a lean spot in 2&6. Go figure. Main jets increased from 72 to 75. Test drive to work in the morning. See what happens.

It was the radiator

It was the radiator
I borrowed a mates 2 core aluminum radiator & the temps are under control.
Will continue to update as money exchanges for parts, & the parts arrive in the mail.

Ill start with a thermo fan on the last radiator gave the worst results.

I did some runs back and forth my my place to a mates and all the streets are windy & short, so only get into 3rd gear b4 hitting the brakes to turn a corner.
With no shroud, no mechanical fan & only a 16"thermo pushing through the radiator it maintained a steady temp of 195 even after pulling up & idling for 5mins. I previously could not do this. So im pretty happy @ the moment :grinpimp:

On a side note. A 16" thermo spinning the correct way, correct pitch blades DOESN'T push much air !

Is it just me or is that gearbox and transfer hanging down too low? Good to see you have it sorted, hardly see any 55s that aren't rusted totally away.

Herb the gearbox hangs a little, but nothing of concern to me @ this stage & intended purpose. (Highway cruiser/daily commuter). If i was to wheel it, yes it would need a bash plate.
I waiting on getting access to a parts pig. I'm keen to take lots of measurements on hand brake height from the ground. Tail shaft lengths & angles. Position of the motor in the engine bay. The list goes on :D

I un bolted the sill? panel this arvo. It was blocking 10cm of my radiator. Although im not having overheating problems, i still want more control :) Air conditioning is in the plans list.

I am not sure I follow you on this post?

Are you talking fans mounted on the water pump and belt driven? If that is the case, aren't those fans pulling air (vs. an electric mounted in front of rad to push)?

Mate im going around in circles here with the repair. Sorry its confusing however here it is simplified :)
First attempt :- The day i brought i I stuck a 4 core radiator in it & stayed with the original engine driven fan, this was a big improvement but did not solve it.
2:- I swapped out to a different engine fan but it didnt help.
3:- I then stuck a 16" thermo on & this was the worse move i did.
4:- I then went back to the original engine fan & fitted a shroud. This didn't solve it either. However airflow was most impressive.
5:- Then i borrowed & fitted a 2 core alloy radiator with a pusher thermo fan fitted, this solved my problem. (No engine driven fan at all)

I have learnt that when i get my own 2 core alloy radiator i want to get a custom shroud made to suit it & run a new 7 blade engine driven fan.
Why not use the shroud i already have u say? It doesn't fit. The 4 core radiator had top & bottom tanks, the 2 core alloys are cross flow. The cores are different sizes, but overall dimensions of the entire rads are almost identical.
I hope this helps.

On a side note, today i watched the thermostat open a close twice on the way to work. For me, removing the lower sill below the grill has has improved the amount of airflow across my radiator:bounce:

Weekend mods

I got some replacement rocker covers to replace my rusty old ones.
I also brought some re-usable, steel insert gaskets to seal in the golden syrup.

Last night i was given a 2 barrel 350 Holley & 4 barrel adapter. My mate saved it from going to the tip so he passed it on :D I blew the cobwebs out with compressed air & bolted it on. Before it started I noticed the needle & seat leaking so it got a new one. Then it started & idled like a dream wagon. Here is a pic of the dirty old sucker -

I then went to drive it & nothing but a massive cloud of black smoke out the exhaust. So off with the bowl & this is what i find. Some one stole the main jets :hhmm:

Stuck in some 65's as that was the smallest i had & test drove it. Very happy :)

Its been a while since I've done a update.
Since new year, the PIG has been my daily driver. My 2nd gen Hilux has needed lots of money spent on it however its finally back on the road today.
This allowed me to do some much needed maintenance on the pig.
Today I installed MY new radiator. I got it off eBay for $150 inc shipping. I took it to the local aluminum fabrication workshop to have some right angle brackets welded on. This cost $210, not impressed at all at the price, ripped off I think.
Anyway here is a pic of it

I installed a shroud this time

I like this Jap type radiator cap :D

Here is a quick video of the PIG idling whilst Im checking the radiator.
The dent has been booked in for repair when I go away on holidays.

When i brought the pig it came with a 600 holley that was a royal pain in the :censor:
It stunk of fuel all the time.
It was very hard to start.
Fuel was dripping from the idle transfer slot when the engine was off.
+ a few other problems
Well today I found this. A pin prick in the metering plate that exposes all the fuel in the bowl to the idle transfer circuit.
Get some quick steel tomorrow & glue it up.

Bob, considering I now have a Edelbrock performer manifold, that makes sense.
However
I calculate that I need a 500cfm carby. Edelbrock list their Performer Series 500cfm as calibrated for Performance !
Where as the 600cfm is calibrated for economy. Go figure.
Also, nobody in Australia uses Edelbrocks, its mainstream Holley & Barry Grant. Therefore great local tuning knowledge is limited to none
If I went a 600cfm Edelbrock, I can only see I will be getting a better fuel atomization through better booster design. As both the 1850 Holley & Edelbrock are square bore, ain't they ? Giving same venturi size = same air speed.
I did try a early Carter (basically now Edelbrock) & thought good things of it, but secondary tuning proved to be extremely hard & thus gave up.
So unless someone can give me a awesome reason to go Edelbrock, ill stick out & wait for a price on the new Barry Grant, get a reco GM rochestor or stuck with my now glued up 600 which drove really nice this arvo :D
Oh, i priced up a 500cfm Eddy at the local carby shop a few months back. He wanted $600 :bang:

Wow, can't belive its been 4 months since my last post.
The pig has been away for a month or 2 at the panel beaters. He did a awesome job on my "caved in rear panel" . It is now arrow straight. Im not 100% happy with the paint colour match, but this NOT his fault. I had 2 lots of eye match tint made up and this has been the closest. For the moment is sealed up and brown.
Longer term plan is to take it to a paint supplier that has 1 of those cameras that can formulate the tint and then ill respray that panel myself.

2 weeks ago I picked up 4 16" split rims for $50. Two front tires are Light Trucks that have only just had the hairs worn off and the rears are good tread trust old Goodyears. I don't really like the combo but ill get used to it.
On the positive side, it steers so much better, and the taller tires suit the gearing way better.
Ill get around the painting the rims soon, just my drag car is priority no# 1 at the moment.

The pig has a new toy in its pen.

That's all, not much else to update.
