I keep forgetting that you guys down under got all the cool trucks, like crew cab First and Second Gens.
:flipoff2:
Seriously, I'm jealous, you have a fine fleet in the making!

Yeah & they real expensive to buy here too. Average price on a 2nd gen diesel 4 door is $5000.
I guess that's because everybody with a family wants one.

Well bad news.
MR-PIG is thirsty. I only got 200km from 65ltrs. I think that's roughly 7mpg or there abouts. :bang:
THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM.

I would gladly pay 5K for a diesel 2nd Gen, that's cheaper than putting a diesel in my First Gen!

7 is low, even for a pig.
What's you gearing?
What shape's your engine in?

Timing chain could be off by a tooth, and the engine would run fine, but suck down fuel and offer less power than it should.
I'd also recommend a leakdown.

is it a vacum secondary holley? might have all 4 barrels open just from high revs. maybe its your foot? lol.. maybe poor quality fuel?
i notice all my v8's use more fuel and lack power on the cheaper fuels.
good quality fuel def seems to bring my old school v8's back to life abit.
not sure what mpg it gets but im sure its better than 200kms for 65 litres.
i can drive from here to city (over 200kms) and guage barely moves.

what kinda holley is that? pretty sure u can get dif vacum springs so seconds open at dif revs/vacum.

I suspect the carby to be at fault.
My driving style is a little heavy, but ive owned many v8s. So the need to drive it hard ain't there anymore. I'm using MR-PIG as a daily commuter as i have done with a my v8 cars. Ive never had worse economy.
Its a square bore vac sec 600 Holley.
The power valve is OK. Std 6.5" unit.
There is a distinct dud spot around 2500RPM during anything above very light acceleration. From what i can put it down to, the secondaries are coming in to early and to fast. As i don't have a sec spring kit i fitted 2 std springs. This made a big improvement however is still not correct. It is during this dud spot i get a fuely smell through the exhaust. According to Holley tech page. I need to fit a heavier spring !
As a test, i will fit my 650 mech sec demon that's on my turbo charged 308cu motor. I'm just waiting on some AN (JIC) fittings to arrive so i can plumb it in.

Change subject.

The shroud.
I don't think i need one to SOLVE my problem.
After work yesterday i braved a hot radiator & removed the engine driven fan and fitted the 16" thermo from my other v8. I took the pig for a drive & it got a lot hotter & quicker.
I then removed the thermo & refitted the engine fan.
If this 16" thermo fan can cool a solid cammed, high stalled, turbocharged 308cu motor & it can't cool a mild SBC, then the SBC has problem.
So today i noticed the radiator hoses become very stiff with pressure after a quick trip to work. Engine temp is only 190. That's below water boiling point. So i thought maybe i have a tiny compression leak into the water system. I brought a tin of Chemi-weld and followed the instructions. I did notice b4 i added it, running the engine without the radiator cap on i had foaming from the radiator. Chemi-weld is great stuff, and if i have a porus block/head/gasket this will fix it. Will know tomorrow when i get to work
Either way, i plan to replace the head gaskets in the near future.

Rochester Quadrajet ???????

The chemiweld did not dissolve in my radiator properly.
But i drove it to work yesterday anyway. Temp was slightly lower so it may be on the way to self repair ?

Have been a bit sick of hearing the window bang against the door every time i close it. Found the spot welds on the regulator broken so i tacked that back together.
Made adjustments to the regulator and lubed it all up.
Straightened the window frame, now the window goes up and down smoothly :grinpimp:

Made some adjustments to the door catch to suit the worn door hinge. Now i don't have to lift the door when closing it :D

Got a quote on repairing the rear dent. $800 cash. I know the guy & reckon i can get it cheaper, so ill work on that. I do 4ltr refurbs on forklifts all day, but still not 100% confident to pull out such a big dent. Bog, paint is no problem for me.

Looking at eventually replacing the Holley with a reconditioned spread bore Rochester Quadrajet. Any thoughts on this ????

test carb is on

Fitted the 650 Mighty Demon today.
Couldn't remember what jets was required so i guessed F65 R76. It started 1st pop when hot & cold so that was a major improvement. Went for a drive, didn't run to smooth at all.
Come back home & did some research. My carb is supposed to have F71 R79 so i stuck those in. Gave it a tune up at got 16" of vacuum. That's 2" more then the 600 Holley :bounce:
Hopefully with the correct jets it will run much smoother, going for a test drive soon.

IDIOT

So after I pulled off the bowl and fitted some 72 jets I noticed I had the pump squirter set incorrectly. That would be my flat spot :bang: Oh well it did surge a little on cruise indicating its lean.
Test drive tomorrow on the way to work.

I decided to tint the windows. Considering the condition of the glass, & the fact I did it, I'm pretty happy. I may reconsider doing the passenger rear again. The window must not have been as clean as I thought it was.
Total cost. Less then $100

Even though I don't have AC yet :), the cabin is so much cooler. The back floor has gone from burning my feet to cool
FIY, tint is 5%

I'm not so clear on my AUDM pigs, but those tail lights look like pickup assemblies.
Is that a thing unique to the lands Down Under, a PO conversion, or a late model thing?

All the piggies running around here seem to have the small squares higher up on the band set into the rear corners.

Re Tail lights.
This is a 78 model. However my little knowledge of pigs makes me think that Aussie models have only the pickup lights.

Here is were i stand with the motor.
New head gaskets on. Didn't do much at all if anything :(
Pinched my brothers water pump, didn't make a difference :(
I'm thinking I might need a high flow thermostat ????? Water speed in the radiator is lazy. Initially the water flow without the thermostat was really fast.
I also plan on fitting this COMP Cams: Xtreme Energy™, XE250H <BR> Very Strong Torque, Smooth Idle
Then this #2101 manifold Edelbrock.com - Manifolds - Chevrolet - Performer - Small Block
Then to top it all off a reco Rochester Quadrajet.

wow, that's quite the puzzle. At least you're now certain of the quality of you motor's top-end.

FWIW the Q-Jet's probablt the best carb out there for an SBC, I think it's a solid choice to make.

Today i borrowed a radiator shroud. Fits the radiator as it should but will need modifying to suit the PIG due to radiator being so close to engine :(
However the same guy lent me a 7 blade fan off his other v8 that doesn't run a shroud. This does fit :) It pulls a massive amount of air through the radiator & across the engine. Can't wait till tomorrow morning for a test drive on the way to work

7 blade fan did not fix it.
Noticed the engine sat 3/4" over to Aussie passengers side so i moved the radiator over that way also. Got the shroud to fit. Didn't fix it.
A high flow thermostat did not fix it.
Borrowed a infra gun. Top & bottom rad tanks same temp. Flushed the rad, no improvement.
I also noticed the spark plugs on 2 & 6 are bone white & dry. Consistent with higher EGT on those exhaust ports.
Found the brake booster hose had a split by the clamp, BUT the booster draws from 2 & 7. Replaced the vac hose, will test drive tomorrow but i doubt it will fix the problem.

That 55 is CLEAN! If it were me, I'd boat anchor that V8 and put a turbo diesel in.;)
