Glad to hear that it worked out well for you. Since you still have a lot of the Amsoil ATF left over, you might consider exchanging the fluid in your power steering system if you haven't already. I used the Amsoil ATF in mine and it seems to like it. It only takes maybe 2 Quarts. There's a good write-up on the procedure in the FAQ. Compared to the transmission, it's a piece of cake!

Nice write up Josh, thank you for contributing.

Well, It worked.
When I dropped the pan and cleaned it out the ATF in there was actually pretty clean so I didn't feel that 5 gallons was necessary. By the time the 2nd gallon passed through, the fluid draining into the waste bucket looked as clean as the new fluid. I did run it through the gears a few times.
.

im pretty new to this so forgive me if my question is stupid but when you drop the pan do you get any leakage of ATF? or is all with in the level of the pan? also what should be replaced here the filter? or is just cleaned? my 80 has about 125k i think i had the tranny fluid replaced about 40 k or 50 k ago but im not even sure if the shop i went to replaced or cleaned filter so i would like do it soon. also can any one recomend good ATF and how much i will need/ how often to change it? thanks

I'm looking into this. I'm sure it needs to be done as this is for sure a commonly overlooked fluid to replace on any car/truck. Maybe I'll tackle it this next week. Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks Mo. I've learned a ton here already. I'm glad I was able to give a little back. You're welcome to use my setup anytime. Just let me know. It's really a quick method.

First, you will want to drain the tranny fluid via the drain plug. Once it's done draining, you can drop the pan to clean the magnets & filter. When you unbolt the filter there will be a bit of fluid in there that will drain out. Clean the filter with brake cleaner and replace it. Then you can re-install the pan & refill the tranny with fluid.

There should be a link in the FAQ thread for a discussion on recommended tranny fluid. I think the concensous is for a fully synthetic, you can't go wrong with Redline or Amsoil. They're both a bit pricey though. IMO, totally worth it.

Did I mention how buttery smooth she shifts now. Wow. Huge improvement. :D

Just to add to what jdsti said above, you should use Toyota Red FIPG (form in place gasket) when reinstalling the pan. Also, make sure you have the correct torque rates for the bolts when reinstalling. Apparently they are easy to over torque.

x2 on the Amsoil Universal ATF. My 80 trans seems to like the stuff.

Good luck with it!

One more thought

If the typical operating pressure of the tranny cooler was know and reasonably low, a small pressured (regulated air over the fluid) container of fresh ATF would be the safest method of refilling via cooler lines. Does anyone know the approximate pressure on the tranny cooler at idle?

I had access to a bg machine tonight to exchange the transmission fluid. I snapped a picture of the pressure gauge while the fluid was transferring. Looks like it’s 1.0 gallon per minute according to the gauge.

It maybe worth noting that i forgot to turn off the ac so when the compressor kicked on the pressure increased just a little bit.

Does the BG machine have a replaceable filter on the IN side,
ie: going from the new fluid tank to the transmission? Got a photo
of that?

Not that I’m aware of but I Really don’t know the machine well. The only screen I saw was a mesh screen when the fluid is first poured in. It will be a while before I’m back at the shop to take more pics.
