Note: This is applicable to 80-series rigs as well, depending on the market.

Since Toyota has been making this motor since, well - basically **forever** (in vehicle years), I was wondering if there are certain years or production runs in certain factories which are notoriously good or bad.

Not just the castings themselves, but changes to factory internals (bearing compositions, number of crankshaft bolts or the materials used in them, valve springs durability, etc.).

I understand that regular maintenance is key above almost all else, but some engines are lemons no matter how much love you lavish on them.

There are a bunch of websites devoted to other engines (Ford 7.3, Dodge/Cummins 5.9) which seem to imply that there are some unicorn years, and some years to avoid if possible.

Wondered if it were the same for the Toyota 4.2...
