Thanks, me either! The weekend turned out pretty good... :D

I'm excited!

Thanks!

Well, I worked on it for ~12 hours yesterday... And... I drove it to work today! :D:bounce::cool:

I love having my truck back. I drove it for about 20 miles last night and everything ran well. Temps were good ~180*, oil pressure was solid. I'll try to get pics up tonight. I cleared the CEL's and they haven't come back on. (They were only on because I had forgotten to plug in the MAF...)

Now I have to clean the garage... Oh and put the hood back on... And all the other things I had on my list before this happened...

glad its back together, does it feel any different?

Nothing majorly noticeable, but I'm driving it pretty easy for the first few hundred miles. It feels like it will unleash a bit though if I were to hammer it and it seems to hold the hills better.

Once I get more miles on it, I'll advance the timing and report back. (currently set at factory spec'd 3 degrees BTDC)

Alright! Well, I've been driving it now for a few days and LOVIN' IT.

Here are the pics of the install, and one VERY BIG take-away.

All bolted up on the stand, read to be dropped in!

I put as much on as I could while it was on the stand to avoid having to do it while in the engine bay.

Off the engine stand and floating in the air.

Bolted up the Flywheel. INCORRECTLY. More to come...
IMG_1287.jpg

This is your final warning. DO NOT COMMIT THIS SAME ERROR.
It gets worse.

I didn't notice it.

My truck is so tall, I have the rotors on wood blocks ~3" above the cement. The borrowed cherry picker was priceless.

As I lowered it in, an inch or three at a time, I snaked the wiring harness through the manifold.

Got it all bolted up to the tranny

BUT WAIT!! You dummy! You can't get the flywheel to bolt up to the torque converter because you bolted it on BACKWARDS 6 HOURS AGO!!!

:bang::bang::bang::bang::censor::censor::censor:

Walked away for a day. I'm glad I took Sunday off. I was so pissed and resolved to having to pull the whole motor again that I benefited from not touching it for a while.

So Monday came and I really thought I wouldn't be getting it done. I ended up being able to disconnect the engine from the tranny and pulled it forward just enough to get my wrenches on to the 10 flywheel bolts.
Wrong Way:

(the glow is from the fire I lit under the truck when I was debating just burning the thing to the ground)

Back in business and it ended up only taking about 2 hours to correct.

Manifolds on with new hardware:

Fluids! Also got the intake/TB/air cleaner and the rest of the bits on.

Turned it over for a few minutes with the dizzy disconnected. Then reconnected it and she fired up! Stalled. More air in the fuel lines, then fired up!

She was running a bit rough- loping idle. Then I realized I forgot to plug in the MAF... :whoops: Plugged 'er in and everything smoothed out. Set the timing back to 3* (will advance in the future). The CEL was on because of the MAF being disconnected.

I took her for the maiden voyage. So smooth! The idle was quite rough before the rebuild, now I can barely notice the engine running. I haven't pushed it very hard yet, but I feel like she'll definitely have increased power over where she was. Seems to hold the hills a bit better. I have about 100 miles on it now, and I'm so glad to have my Cruiser back!

No more CEL's either. :clap::clap:

Oh, I'm not finished yet...

Still have to clean up that mess...

Beno Bling!

Thanks again for your help Onur! You're the man!

What a thread.. get a mini education on the entire motor from just this thread.
Love the beno prizes and the part about fire glaring off the engine in case you wanted to burn the truck to the ground in frustration

Great skills and lots of money you got :)

Haha, thanks!

Not anymore...

I figure I spent ~5 months worth of new car payments for a totally fresh motor that will (hopefully) last me another 250,000 miles. That's about 20 years in my driving...

Or look at it this way-I've had the truck for ~2.5 years. This equals out to less that $100/month...

I'm ok with that. I haven't had any other major issues with the truck, so...

Nice job.

Well done. Nice attention to detail.

Nice job on the rebuild..................now onto those flex shots! :steer:

Haha, seriously. And finish the drywall in the basement and...

So I have ~120 miles on the rebuild now. Seems like the ECU is back to learning the settings and everything feels pretty solid.

Any opinions on when it's ok to adjust the timing? Also, at what point can I stop holding my breath that something might go wrong?

For hg rebuilds on my old cars it was the usual 1000 miles of moderate driving to make sure all settles in.. Is it that much different with your rebuild.. Not sure

Good luck :)

Yeah waiting for the ECU to learn was all of my stress. Now that it's close to 600 I'm feeling really good.
