Anyone thought of putting stock size tires on their FJ40 restoration?

31" tires on a 40 makes them look like a 2wd asphalt queen. 33" BFG or even 33" all terrain on steelies keep the stock look but really enhance the overall look and capability. I get it though if you just want the absolute total purist, unmolested 40 look. Just my humble 2 cents but 31" look like crap, just not to my taste.

Really? 31x10.50R15 Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs have gotten me a lot of places...

So just an update, I did it... I went ahead and ordered H78-15s. They are "real H78-15s" not a size replacement. They are on Back Order for 3-4 months. So it will be a while.

Now I will have to look for stock (interested in NEW only) suspension. So I will, eventually, sell the whole OME setup (springs, shocks, bolts), as well as the tires. I think I bought it as a complete kit, they still have the stickers on them as new.

I will post some pics as soon as I get them, so everyone can get a good laugh...

When i was first got my cruisers I was young and did not like the stock cruiser look. I modified mine with lift/tires etc. Now I love the stockers and I am $lowly bringing them back to stock. Want to eventually get an earlier model pre - '71 and restore it to stock condition.

What tire did you end up going with in the H78-15?

Depends on the year.

The older cruisers had 700-15, which more or less had a 30" OD.

Destin has a set of the ones you posted in your first post, you can check out his build thread in the 25 section...be ready to read as he is doing a great job detailing the work being done!

Okay... bad news the guy called the factory and it is UNLIKELY that these will ever be produced again... back to the drawing board. Would prefer to put tru H78-15 (labelled as such) on it, I will start looking thru more links to see if I can find.... if anyone has any sources, please speak up!

i would call Specialty Tires of America:
STA Super Traxion Light Truck Bias Ply Tires

they are the ones who make those tires...they also have L78 very close.

I may be working with a tire company called Vee Rubber on the bicycle division and they have some nice industrial tires that would work... they are a 16" rim size and are 7.5" .. here is a link.. > Vee Rubber Thailand

I heard back from Les Schwab. Only 6 of those tires sold last year and they need a minimum order of 35 at the factory to make them. They are out. I wonder if they could remake the original snow cruiser tire?

You are confusing aesthetics with physics. The larger tire will tolerate more heat, but it will also require more "work" to get temperature into the tire in the first place. The contact patch will also be different, and not necessarily "larger" with the bigger tire. The vehicle weighs "X" amount and the tire patch is a certain size. If you increase the size of the patch you reduce the weight (load) applied to that patch.

We found a Snow Cruiser, in good condition, from a fellow 'Mudder to match the set that came on our stocker. Came in the mail. Used our rockcrawler to pop the bead and replaced the stem...makes a fine spare.
Stockers are SO sexy.
