I drove past this truck today and had to take a closer look.

Here is the write up ver batim:

1986 Toyota Pickup
Rare original toyota diesel 2.4L four wheel drive
75,000 original miles on 2.4L diesel toyota motor
Body has always been in West Texas- no rust.
Diesel engine installed 2012. New clutch, seals, belts, hoses, auxiliary fuel pump.
New starter, rebuilt diesel injector pump, new injectors, new glow plugs, block heater.
Excellent offroad suspension - ne Old Man Emu springs, nitrogen shocks, IFS.
Air conditioning.
Standard cab, long bed.
New BF Goodrich off road tires. Aluminum rims.

This truck is ready to go. It will live longer than you. Toyota only imported into the US about 1000 diesel pickups 1984-1986. Solid

The truck looks like it is in pretty good shape from the outside. I have not got to look at the interior yet. I'm wondering about the need for all the engine work with only 75k miles on the clock. I'm trying to get ahold of the owner but was wondering if the price seems reasonable for a std. cab and all?

Update:
Owner called me back and I got to the bottom if the story on the 2012 engine.
Turns out the truck was a factory gas vehicle but when the engine went south, the guy installed this diesel in it's place. This is when he replaced all the parts mentioned. The engine has 75k on it when he installed it. He never drives the truck so is selling it. I'm seriously considering it. Is it a decent deal at 5K? When we were talking he did mention he would listen to an offer, so it is not a firm 5K...

What engine? If it's the check the FAQ for a write up on a similar swap and it has some pros and cons of diesel Toyota Engines.

There's a 2lte and a few 3 models I believe.

I offered the guy $3,800. We shall see. I'm thinking I will take the diesel and swap it into my 85 x-tra cab and put the 22RE in it's place then resale the truck for around $3,500.

The guy came back with wanting $4,000 for the truck and a spare five speed along with a good title for a second parts truck.
Tempted, but I looked at the engine today and I wasn't impressed with the swap someone did. The electrical looks like a child did it.
The interior is just so so. No rust anywhere on the truck, but I think I'll pass on it.

Now it's getting interesting...
The guy calls me up a few minutes ago and says he'll let me have it for $3,500 with the spare 5 speed, a spare set of 4 31" tires. The original truck the diesel engine came out of (1984 2wd). extra set of door panels. The parts truck looks like it fell off a cliff and then hit by a train, but it does have a title I could maybe use since I have a truck without one. In Texas, trucks are titled by the frame. It could possibly be done legally IDK yet. If not then I won't. Either way, I have a decision on my hands...

Rather than tackle all the electrical issues that would bug me, it might be easier to swap that engine into my extra-cab truck and start from scratch. Then I would have everything I want. I'm thinking out loud here as usual.

If you have the cash, get it. Here's the thing, that diesel title is gold here in Cali cause you don't have to smog. Honestly the L is cool but it's way past it's time. I would vin swap the diesel truck and the one your Xtra cab then dropped a de smogged 22re in it and bam! Never smog and have a Bitchin little engine that will have more power and get better mpgs. Just my .02

About the only smog item on a 22re is the EGR, and removing won't make a dang bit of difference from the driver's seat, or at the gas pump. It doesn't have a smog pump to worry about which is the traditional hawg of performance and fuel economy. The only other item is the PCV, which does nothing to improve/hurt performance or mileage.

Swapping VIN plates, in New Mexico anyway, is a felony which gets the vehicle crushed and the defendant in the Grey-bar Hotel...........

@Toast it depends. With the non Cali models we only have 1 O2 sensor before the cat for EFI. But Cali models have 2. O before the cat and one after.

I know you are not saying it, but just so we are all clear ... the Ox sensor is NOT a smog device. It's part of the EFI engine control system.

Pickups in Texas are titled by the Frame VIN. A cab swap is permitted and will pass a level 2 inspection. To do this legally, I would have to use the diesel frame which has been bent beyond repair IMO. I don't believe cutting the VIN off the frame and welding it onto a good frame would be legal, but with that said, I'm sure there is a magic number as to what percent of the old frame must be salvaged. I say this because I have a running untitled truck that could be a good candidate but honestly I don't have that kind of energy to do a frame swap.

I will contact the guy and see if he will sell me the wrecked diesel truck though. It has a bunch of parts I need like the pedal assembly and some doors that could be made into half doors. Also the bed has good metal corners at the rear where the taillights go. Mine are unrepairable. The floor of the bed is also good to have to use for patch material on mine. There is a gas engine in the bed that has a nice stainless steel header I could use. It has a bunch of tubes that bend around the back side of the engine and attach to the base of the carb. Wonder if they can be removed and it made to work for my EFI engine???

Correct. It is absolutely illegal.
