You want to confirm first that you in fact have 12v at the black wire with a yellow stripe coming out of your harness. It's the only wire you will need from your harness.

Assuming it has 12v it would connect to the positive terminal on an internally ballast resisted coil. The red wire from dizzy goes to the same post. Black wire goes to the negative side.

Ok, thanks for the feedback Marshall. But to be clear regarding the "blackwire with a yellow stripe coming out of your harness" was it originally connected to the coil positive post? The original wires show with loop connectors are all I see available - and this is how it run in stock form. The right loop went to the right post (+) and the left loop went to the left post (-) (there are actually 2 wires hooked together here).

So am I right in needing one of these wires or look elsewhere in the harness for the black wire with a yellow stripe?

By the way it looks as if you have a really nice cruiser. Can I see the rest? You have a build I missed?

Thanks, and yes I am in a build, just haven't posted much. Here is a pic

Yes, you should have a black/yellow stripe wire connected to the (+) positive side of the coil.

Sounds like you have Gear Reduction starter? If so, I believe only two wires are needed; one 12V wire to battery (+) positive post & one wire from the ignition. See post #13 for a diagram of a '77 wiring of the TH Dizzy & GRS.......Maybe an 80 FJ40 is similar?

Nice Shop!

The BY wire you are looking for connects to the ignitor box on the coil, disconnect that green connector and take the big BY and connect it to the + side of the coil. Make sure the larger BY wire is putting 12+ volts out while cranking, Attach dizzy to coil+. If it is putting out lower then 12v it has a resister wire in the harness like my 2/78 in this case you have to bypass the resistor wire to power your dizzy with 12v
