I've been wanting to get a set of sliders on my "mula" (mule) for some time now. The mod was high on my priority list, but not on the "responsible things to spend money on" at the moment. After thinking about the future trips and trails that I want to run this year...(Big Bear area, Sedona, AZ...etc. etc.) I talked myself into getting this mod done this month. Not having the resources to drop almost a grand on brand name sliders (great products but out of my price range at the moment) I went a different route, like Box Rocket, & Atoyot1031 (Nick) did.

Having read their posts, and confirming that this option met their needs, I decided to follow suit and called Adam at 4xinnovations and after a 10 minute conversation he agreed to make me a set of sliders in DOM steel and the kick out feature, a bit longer than his 68" option. The 72" slider specs are 1 3/4" x .120. 2 weeks later the sliders where delivered as agreed. 1 week ahead of his promised time frame. Thanks Adam.

Not having a bolt on option, I considered having my friend Russell at CV Off road weld them to the frame and call it a day, (would have been a lot cheaper,) or fab some brackets to bolt them instead. I chose the ladder, and went with George's face plate designs (3/16" plate) and 1/2" U-bolts (thanks George.) This was more time consuming that expected, but it is nice to be able to take off the sliders for having work done on la mula. the biggest pain in the rear was not finding a local spring shop to make me the U-bolts I needed and ended up getting them from Williams CH & Sons in Modesto, CA.

It took almost a full days work of fabricating, welding, and installing, but I am very pleased with the results, thanks Russell.

Under Cat Support
The cat plate is almost 4.5" wide by 20" long. Made of 1/4" steel.
The outriggers WERE gusseted to the face plates with 1/4" steel.
A tip, if you are going to go this route, make sure Adam sends you a longer than his usual outrigger poles, as you will need it for the front driver side.;)

The sliders are mounted at almost 90 degrees from the frame (flat) to facilitate using them as steps. The rear kick outs are great for this as well.

The next step is to paint them....will post pics once I do.

See link for pics.

Those look real nice, at first i thought the cat guard was small at 4x6 but then i saw the extra wings. Congrats on a job well done.

Those look nice. You will hate that cat skid if you play in the rocks much.

Great job! I will admit though, just being devil's advocate here, but the outrigger arms look a little small. I know i used box tube and with the weight of the truck on them, they still bow a little.

Other than that, go try them out! :)

so what kinda money do you have invested in those sliders so far?

Good work! Nice to see a few more people trying something different. I think this kickout design is a very valuable feature for sliders on an 80. I wish mine had them but mine were free so what can I say?

As for the comment about the outriggers being small........

Mine look to be the same material. At first, they did flex some (more than I liked) so I added gussets that ran between 4-6" down the top of the outrigger and 3-4" up the frame. That helped stiffen things up a lot. I can see you have some small gussets on yours now, but I think you'll probably get a little bit of flex in them still. It would be worth adding a larger gusset in my opinion.

Other than that.....they look great!

I can't figure out the multi-quote feature here....

"Nice, I like the kick outs. What did they cost to fab and weld to frame?"
I paid $40 locally for more steel to fab the bolt on face plates and box steel for the cat outrigger...(3/16" 2'x3' plate which there is 80% left over for a future project..custom tire carrier on OEM bumper) so figure face plate steel and ubolts ran me $50....The fabbing and welding is where the costs can add up. I helped russell do the work, and he got me a reduced price on the labor...otherwise there is no sense going this route as you are nearing SROF bolt on pricing....However, there is a sense of satisfaction for learning a thing or two on fabrication...(first time for me...)

"so what kinda money do you have invested in those sliders so far?"

around $600....(again could have been ALOT cheaper if I just decided to have weld them to the frame instead..and it is the way to go if you can't weld and need to pay someone to do the welding...)

I have a feeling the cat guard will need to be shortened, OR braced for extra support.

I built one almost identical to that. It had some drain holes lasered in and had a lip to help slide over obstacles. It will not hold up and was bent like a pretzel after a year or two. It bends up into the exhaust pipe or the cats or both. Then you have rattles. I had Alia176 cut it off with his plasma cutter about a year ago.

Brace it or lose it.

nice job
faceplates look a bit thin

Face plates have worked for George...and the many others who have used their templates. I may loose the cat plate....Box Rocket, I may have to brace the outriggers like you say....good point.

Box rocket, good point on needing the extra bracing...will have to look into that...
The face plates are 3/16" thick..should be fine. Good feedback on the cat plate, I may have to take my Dewalt recip saw to it....and shorten it.

Latinoguy,

Thank you for posting this. The feed back we are getting is great! I really want to get some products rolling for the FJ series. There is a lot of work ahead of us to do that, but your feed back here will help us created better products in the end! I would have liked to have seen a 1/4" plate too, but I don't doubt that if you can add a larger gusset in there you'll be ok with the 3/16".

I think they look great on the truck, good work on the install!
