So I brought home a 1981 FJ60. My plan is to turn it into a budget wheeler.

The body is in prety good shape, interior is avg to above. It has a new short block, head gasket, and machined head.

Now the bad. Electrical gremlins. I am going to download a wiring schematic from the tech section(for those of you that don't know, there is an area outside of the clubhouse that is dedicated to Toyota Tech;))

Pics to follow.

Don't be jealous of the front bumper.

Good score Jes! Knowing how you are you probably didn't pay but $50 for it!!! The front bumper rocks!

Nice score Jes, I better be see'in that thang at the "Crawl" in Arkansas
 welcome back to the wagon madness.

Is this your first 60?
I had a 62 but always wanted a manual. I also like the round eyes.

I'm still working on price but it will be fair....for me.

That's the plan.

Nice!

Electrical gremlins is not common on Cruisers so I would start at anything that has been added. Also, the main grounds.

My electrical stuff looks BRAND NEW when I go into it after 25 yrs.

Well, the fusible link is missing so I think I will start there.

Two white cruisers in two weeks!

His and Hers Cruisers

Sweet!!

excellent jes! I like 60's and kinda wish I had kept the one Greg & I purchased a year or so ago with the bum transmission & engine...

I have washed it twice and need to wash it again but it is starting to clean up nicely. The p.o. had it parked under a tree but the mildew is coming off. He also installed a heavier nap carpet that holds everything. I think he had a yeti locked in it for the past year.

I have a gear reduction starter and a fuisble link on the way from CDan. After that I will be looking to figure out the fuel issue.

I want to have the truck wheelable in time for the SCC.
I'm thinking:
rebuild knuckes
4.88's
spring over
hi steer
2 lo mod
NP203 doubler
welded rear diff
locked front diff
rear discs
sliders
wheels and tires

Anybody got 4grand I can borrow?

Budget wheeler? Looks like Bill Gates budget.

All of my wish list won't happen before the crawl.

I hope to spring it over, regear, lock the diffs and get some used tires by October.

The biggest problem with the FJ-60 for a trail rig is how much $$ you have to spend on it to get it geared correctly if you want to keep the split case.

4.88's are expensive. They do not get you anything as far as trail gearing and for $1000 or so, that is a lot of $$ to spend on a rig unless you plan on driving on the road a lot.

I run the 3.70s with my 33's and they RPMs are perfect for the road. Not a ton of power, but hey, it is a 2F.

For the trail? I just don't know what to tell you. 203 doubler kit is the best bang for the buck but I have not seen that kit available in some time. Marlin's toybox is not available and the Klune is about $2600.

I think if I wanted to crawl with mine, I would get a FJ40 4 speed and Orion and put it in there.

I was just looking at advance adapters site and didn't see one for the splitcase but I have seen guys do it. Where are they getting the plate?

Greg was thinking I could just run some 4.11's from a 62 build up.
