Another 80 with huge tires

The 9" wide and 11" wide XL tires are directional, and even when brand new look like pizza cutter trailer tires.

There's ALOT more tire here...

LAV_Command_Post_US_Army_02.jpg

As there should be, LAV's run 20" tyres and the picture of the XL above it is of a 9.00x16 XL. The overall width difference betwixt a 11.00-16 XL and 325-85-16 XML both mounted on a 16x7 rim is a whole inch.

You cannot mount an XML on a 7" rim.

Look at the XL tires. from the side angle. They are a rounded peak with basically 2 straight tread blocks for tread.

The LAV above is running the 16" rim tires. The 20" rim version is like a 46" tire.

If you measuse from sidewall to sidewall - the 11.00 is 11" and the 325/85 is 13".

The Tread on the XML sticks out past the sidewall bulge. The XL definately does not.

they are tank tires...nuff said.

I have 37" radial Iroks, I will go up against anyone running XMLs or XLs anytime to compare on a trail...same lines, same tire pressure.

....same price?

Same tire pressure shouldn't be a requirement, some tires perform better at different pressures. The question is whether the tire performs or not. A BFG A/T will probably outperform my Maxxis CreepyCrawlers at 30 psi.

They pop up on ebay often.

I think those XL's are the shiznit. But you'd have to take a heat knife to them and sipe the living daylights out of them to get good road manners, and better off road traction.

Cody,
Steering is real loose feeling, gets worse with higher speeds. I wouldnt feel comfortable driving with one hand, both hands are at 10 and 2 always. Feels like it doesnt want to track straight. I'm getting control arms later on, so hopefully that will help and maybe an alignment, although not sure if somebody can do it with these tires on ??
I'm not going to try to defend these tires or my choices anymore. Bottom line is its my truck and Im going to do whatever the hell I want to it. But thanks to all for the constructive criticism, and maybe we will all learn something, especially me.

Give the guy a break.

Everybody needs to calm down a bit....we are not on pirate 4x4. This is how things evolve, people have to push the envelope every now and then its what makes this hobby great. So what if the tires are impractical, they look great and are extremley durable, with only $600 invested i would just run them down at the beach (babe magnet).

I appreciate someone who is willing to take risks, so i don't have to. Maybe someone can try out the new 54" Bogger...now thats overkill.

This thread definitely addresses my questions about the Michelin X series for a regular DD type and occasional off road cruiser. Very helpful thread.

Hey as long as they like them I'm tickled to death, I just wanted anyone that was looking at these as a serious offroad tire to know what they're getting into. I really do think they look great and are perfect for a "Mall Crawler" or "Budget Ghetto Cruiser" :D

Everybody is entitled to their opinion. No one is being abusive. Posting a thought that is contrary to the thoughts of someone else isn't a crime. It's called 'discussion'.

NCJeff,

I don't have that steering issue with mine. I had an alignment with my 35s and Js - and I don't know if that has any carry over effect onto these with the Slee 6 and XMLs.

I can easily drive with 1 hand with my truck. If I let the steering wheel go (no hands) it will drift to the left, but its not fighting me while Im driving at all.

The change to the big tires makes more road noise - but the Slee 6" springs is a much softer, less jarring ride over bumps of any kind.

Can you record a short video or have someone record one of you driving and the steering wheel to show what issues you're having?

I had the XLs on mine, 11.00r16 as has been stated. Loved them, they did good in everything, and IME as opposed to TiredIron, these do GREAT in the mud...hell my XLs did great in anything and everything but rocks, these things are like ice blocks, racing slicks would grip better in the rocks than the XLs. Sand was no problem, even the softest sand at Ocracoke couldn't stop those bad boys. Never got stuck in any mud I put myself in, and these only had about 40% tread or so.

But, I bought them for test fitting as they are close to the same size as the 38.5x11 boggers I have been wanting. Well, they fit and worked better than I expected, but now that I have boggers, I say if you can get a set of boggers for $650 like I did, then go for it, but the $600 vs $1k+ is a no brainer, run the Michelins all day long, but if it was $600 vs $650 like the deal I got, the boggers are a dream come true.
