Another 80 with huge tires

So is it just because they are a heavy tire, thats why they wont perform well offroad? Or is it the tread design that affects it? Anybody know the difference in weight, I think these are like 110lbs???

the upside is that you can take a .22 bullet in the sidewall :)

the problem is what TiredIron said...they aren't made for the applications that most want them for...offroading in adverse terrain.

If you drove a 20 ton truck it might work better, but you are basically driving a tank tire on a 3 ton truck at most.

I imagine they would work well for the beach in terms of floatation, but if you ever bog down I imagine you couldn't spin those too well and keep the rpms up without gearing and hard duty on the driveline.

Same for mud...not enough ponies to push through the gumbo if you get into it.

If you get out there and they work for you, no worries. I just hope they do! I did the research, but I never pulled the trigger, so I am speaking in theory here, but TiredIron has real experience and has Iroks, and Alkalinetrio has experience and now has swamper boggers.

I don't understand why such a big tire... It will not let you use the suspension...

It is just to show off?

Look guys, I can't say that $600 (for a SET of tires) is a poor investment by any standards. Even if they only see mall crawl duty, so what?

Out here in the midwest those tires would be just about perfect for the trails we have (unless muddy).

That is true! We always want more ground cleareance, so why don't we just sell the LC'S and buy horse carriages?

It's not a poor investment...$175/tire is nothing for that size. It's a domino investment, though, because you just set up the rig for that tire size, and the next set is gonna run you $400 a tire :D

Jeff......it seems our challenge is to find mud...and places to wheel, and take pics.

How would you describe the "squirrely steering"? Unbalanced tires? Steering vibe?

What about Alkalinetrio? Didn't he wheel them?

Yep, and promptly ditched them for Swampers.

Not sure why people are having a hard problem understanding the big tire push...the 80 is huge, and for any hardcore wheeling it virtually requires big tires. I play on 35's, and I'm not going up, but damn in big rock gardens you feel like you are on 31's.

Then again, I'm about to install 5.29's, so 37's would certainly work :D.

hang out on ebay for a week or two and a set of 37 inch swampers for 16" rims will float by for cheap. My jeep brothers mock my 27 spline front axles and still wait for their destruction. But they don't know the 80.
however the birfield gods will not be mocked and these 40" tire flings going on here will lead us all down to hell.

Alkaline didnt have these tires.

He had the 38x11" wide ones that looked like tall skinny trailer tires.

Do these tires let the suspension articulate? it seems to me and granted I'm a novice that tires this big would not let the suspension flex much as the tires would just rub to badly.Sure you could go all crazy with bump stops but again your taking away from the suspension. I'm looking into J springs and 33's maybe 35's and 4.88's. to each there own but for me in Tucson and surrounding areas I think articulation is much more important than ground clearance via 40 inch tires. I figure with 33's or 35's and IPOR skid plate, metal tech sliders and a 4x4labs rear bumper I should be able to drag, drop and climb my 80 over just about anything I come across.

The chain link tread pattern on the middle of the tire dose not seem like it would have all that much traction. I'm sure lot of people will be watch how these work out for you and Codyrx7.

still looks cool though.

You mentioned "military tires" and someone else said "Michelin XML's". I tried zooming in on the pics, but I still can't see exactly what tires those are, can you confirm what they are?

Well then I have yet to see anyone wheel the tires you got.

325-85-16 Michelin XML's are pictured, Alkaline had 11.00-16 Michelin XL's. I have had both 9.00-16 and 11.00-16 XL's, grooved and ungrooved and they are no match for the 37" Iroks I run now except in treadwear.

The 9" wide and 11" wide XL tires are directional, and even when brand new look like pizza cutter trailer tires.
