I put the case back together with new oil slinger... I am getting a significant rattle/metallic noise that I believe is coming either from the t-case or the adapter spud shaft/trans output.

I pulled the PTO cover and the oil still looks fine.. no metal to speak of.

I am sure I assembled the case correctly and everything lined up. what do you guys think it could be.

It's driving me insane!!!

Symptoms:

starts at ~ 15mph as a slow click.. clack..click..clack then increases frequency with speed. At higher speeds it is a metallic buzzing noise. It's not gear whine... more a super high frequency rattle.

The only things I can think of are:
- bearings... would not have the click..clack sound right?
-spud shaft/trans output... I swore the splines were tight. no play
-input gear to spud shaft.. splines felt good n tight here too.

I'm at a loss.

Starting to think I'll just rebuild the t-case and go from there.

Georg, if you could help on this it would be greatly appreciated.

Moving Transfer case shift lever

shifters in factory locations. I went back to factory location with the t-case shifter because I could re-use carpet this way. Factory boots look TITS.

Until next time. :beer::cheers:

dbleon: I stayed up till 5am last night reading through all of the various Vortec V8 swaps for the 60. It's been educational. Thanks for the great info you and others have provided here.

I've got an '85 that I'm beginning to think about modifying with a 5.3 and 4L60e transmission. I'm curious, what am I missing that enabled you to move the transfer case shift lever back to its original location so easily? In an earlier post you notched part of the tunnel, and then here you've put the shift lever back. I gather it's fairly straight forward to move its location. I thought it would be more of a challenge.

Thanks in advance.

Bump for any input on noisy t-case.... would a video help?

BTW driving this thing is awesome!!! Took a small trip out to white tanks mountains in west PHX AZ and it performed flawlessly. I laughed when I passed a new Camaro heading west on I-10... never could do that with the 2f.

I do have a small vibration at ~65 but I think its tires. I have crappy mismatched tires on it right now.

I'd run the cruiser on jack stands and listen to the tcase and trans with stethoscope. I'd say you might have a chipped tooth or a cracked tooth in the gear set. Not unheard-of.

I looked at all the gears closely when it was open. Everything was intact.

Would bad idler bearings cause this?

Thanks for the help.

Without hearing/seeing it in persOn it's difficult to diagnose a noise. But a bad bearing would usually cause a whine.

Are you sure it's not the reserve?

Stethoscope......

Damn spell check......

Rearend.

Oh no, not the rear end...

It's definately chatter from the t-case/adapter area.

Have you ever seen a spud shaft rattle where it inserts on the transmission output?

I did this today:

driving along.. kicked t-case into neutral. I still got the rattle, but not as much, then i step on gas, I get the same rattle as if in gear.

Doe this clue in on anything?

Dan,
Don't see how the spud shaft could move. It's locked down by the Transfer Case in the adaptor. I don't see how it could move. Did you grease the splines when you put it together? Maybe the T/C is going so much faster now it's screaming for joy. Keep us informed. matt

Passed AZDEQ emissions testing on the first try!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YEAH BUDDDDDDDDY!!

I had to show the tech where everything was, but they were really cool. I watched as they change the number of cylinders in their computer from 6 to 8 :) :) :) :)

On a side note, they didn't even test the obdII.. Not that I have any codes... but hey

Readings:

HC- Reading: 0.74 Standard: 4.00
CO- Reading: 15.37 Standard: 40.00
NOX- Reading: 1.98 Standard: 5.50

Cheers to all who helped me!!!!!!

What station did you go to? I'm not going to deal with the clowns down here.

matt

You have to.... if your rig is registered in Pima County, it has to be smogged there.

I know this because I had to pass my honda up here, they wouldn't let me do it down there.

I went to the station on 51st Ave/ Roosevelt in west PHX.

I kinda figured out my loud t-case too. I figured out that the shifter boots stop ALOT of noise. I put them on and tightened them down and whalah... no more loud noise.

It is still making a small amount of noise, but its very manageable. I'll deal with it until I have the time to do a full t-case rebuild.

Did you go to a referee? Or just the smog station. I thought you had to go to a referee because of the swap. matt

Nope just the regular smog station...

They did have to have the manager come out and look, but once he saw how clean my work was he just said "it'll pass":D

Its pretty hit or miss they usually don't even care. The first time I went through with mine they treated it like the 2f did the little checks and I was on my way. They only thing he even mentioned was that it was an automatic. 2nd time wasn't much different they didn't even care that it was a v8 they ran it as it sat. Neither time a supervisor even came out. As long as your smog stuff is in tact and working they won't do much inspecting past the basic stuff.
