All windows very slow in cold weather...

I took some measurements while the window lift motors were operating out of the vehicle but the results were inconclusive. The old motor and the new motor both drew about the same amps, but the old motor could not wind the regulator all the way up (which is the down direction) against the spring tension of the regulator.

What we need is a test fixture where the output torque of window lift motors could be measured.

Has anyone bypassed the switch and run heavy gauge wire straight from the battery to the window motor to see if that helps? Other Toyotas have been known for needing upgraded wiring in certain areas, maybe this is one area that needs it.

Trollhole: Is the special price for window parts for the rubber glass runs?

swamped so the motor does not work,i had faith in you. guess it another one for my follow up bucket list.

I replaced all four runs and cleaned my switches and saw little improvement. Well the two windows that didnt work started working again but they were still slow and unreliable. Last week I replaced all four motors, door switches and regulators and now the whole set is like new! fast and snappy! I guess the moral of the storey is there is no silver bullit with the windows. its a combination of issues that may varry from Cruiser to Cruiser.

Uh, ok? Did you replace your window motors with FORD window motors, or motors meant to be in a Toyota? That is why I (and I'm sure many others) keep checking back on this thread...to see if the FORD EXPLODER window motors work/fit/function better than Toyota or Toyota equivalent window motors. There are probably a hundred threads on slow windows on this forum, many of which detail how to make your windows work like new again (buy all new sh!t and WOW they work like new-big surprise!). I want to know if the FORD window motors are better than Toyota, as some have claimed. No one in this thread has confirmed that they do actually bolt right in where the OE motors are.

You can go to Auto_zones website and search for parts; plug in 1997 Ford Explorer and 1997 Toyota Landcruiser and you'll get different part numbers. When I bought a replacement Dorman US driver's side window lift motor the paperwork included directions for three different vehicles but a Ford was not one of them IIRC.

Looks like the toyota part #742-601 is also used in GM, Suzuki, and MITSUBISHI, but not Ford

Have either of you looked at the two side by side or at least compared them in the pictures? Do they even look similar? They could still be the same basic window motors with a different style connector on the wiring pigtail, which could change the part number. Did either of you try changing the years of the vehicle in your parts search to see if different part numbers came up?

i would think that they would be different numbers cause one is supposed to be faster , meaning different numbers . glad my windows still work but out of the 5 cruisers i have had they all were sluggish . i actually cut some of the bottom runners off when they started getting slow works in a pinch never blew a motor .even when i put new runners in i cut them ,as long as there is enough to hold the glass when its ll the way down seems to have worked for me so far. but definitly needs some type of a motor upgrade. looking foward to see who gets this one ?

By doing a quick ebay picture compare of 1994 for example motors they do look very similar except for the connectors. The LC is one connector and the Explorer is 2 wire connector from what I can see

Though after further searching there are many aftermarket "model" #'s for the explorer some with pictured single connectors some with the 2 wire..

Enigma: does the window operate when using the door switch, just not the Master switch? The rocker contacts inside the Master switch can get burned or ?worn out. After servicing my Master switch as a PM both rear windows wouldn't operate via the Master (they did before I opened it up), so I tore back into it, cleaned the contacts again and moved the rocker contacts around, now all windows work again, FWIW.

I doubt the exploder motors work. Think about it. You could probably make anything work with time and effort, even the exploder, but to swap right in. BLAAA

I still have original runs. My secrete is liquid wrench silicone spray lube. Lube it up, spray, let soak, spray, work window, spray let soak..... Take of door panal and clean tracks with q tips. Spray more, and more. Then and only then do they work great. Repeated spraying quarterly always helps. And never stray danielsan

Good to know. This gives me some hope of the Ford window motors working.
