Are you running the Longfield chromoly hub gears? I understand that the oem version can strip the outer splines on the birf, thus voiding the warranty. I'm about to add hubs to my Longs as well.

The manufacturer of the grease-able birfields did not countersink the zerk fitting deep enough into the stub shaft, or used too long a zerk. You could remove the zerk, measure it's length, then shop around for a shorter zerk. A zerk of the same size from different manufacturers may actually be a few thousands shorter or longer, so trying different brands might help. FWIW.
