Does this mod do away with the sytem where warm air is routed from the exhaust manifold to the carb intake during a cold start? Is that a big deal?

I got curious and looked it up. The OE p/n for the FJ62 air filter element according to ToyoDIY.com is 17801‑68020 (I bold-ed the 80 series p/n above). So they're not the same p/n unfortunately.
According to a post in the link above the dimensions for the washable 80 series filter are:

  • Diameter (OD): 8 1/2"
  • ID: 4 1/4"
  • Height: 5 11/16"
Has anyone got a FJ62 filter handy that they can measure?

I have both filters here sitting in the Cruisers and I can pull them out sometime this week and do a side by side comparison and grab measurements.

Took some measurements this afternoon.

2F air filter is 6.6 high x 37.1 long x 26.2 wide. Measurements are in cm. This gives an approximate surface area of 836 cm square.

3FE air filter is 14.8 high x 21.3 diameter (outer) and the inner diameter is 11.0.

1FZ air filter is 14.6 high x 21.7 outer diameter, inner diameter is 11.0.

Surface area of the 3FE and 1FZ is ca. 997 cm square.

The 3FE and 1FZ air filters should be interchangeable as the critical measurement is height. The 3FE that I measured was an OEM while the 1FZ was a NAPA gold (Wix).

One cool thing about the 1FZ housing over the 3FE is the that the 1FZ has an extra little dirt trap that's easily cleaned. Search for "tuna can" in the 80 series forum.

I have a non-USA diesel canister filter that is similar to the 62's. I used it on my 2F prior to the my diesel swap. One of the best mods I did. I sold the carb adapter a while back. but heard that Spector has them again.

Pulling up a dead thread. @doug720 i just got my hands on this setup and trying to find out where did you get the hose you used form carb topper to cleaner? Or what model truck it came from? I have the non USA cleaner with 2f carb topper, but all the after market hose options suck. Figured I’d ask.

Interested in this mod also, but SOR seems to be out of this carb hat. I found this carb hat that may work with a base adapter:
Amazon product ASIN B001OMM6R8
Still would need a suitable connector pipe to pass over the valve cover though.

Doubtful a stock 2F benefits from this mod in any engine performance measurable way.

The benefit I see is just having better access to the top of the engine and giving it a cleaner look. Plus you can show off the airbrushes Pegasus valve cover.

Performance benefit, not really. Ease of maintenance, better design. Yes. Another good option is the 3F carb top, could go all the way and run the 3F valve cover and side cover and reroute PCV. Would look sharp.

No performance benefits, but cleaner for sure and the only way to go in my opinion if you want to run a snorkel. This is a bj air cleaner, 2f carb topper, and OEM hose.

I’m using this set up to make my snorkel functional. The air filter never gets dirty.

How does the bottom mount connect to the inside of the fender well?
Factory bolt holes. They all have them. I just reclocked my ac lines.

Mine did not have the factory fender hole for the bottom mount, but i am not running the 62 air box. The angle is different. The bracket on the side with two holes is flipped on the non US box and the bottom bracket is a different length. The box sits basically level instead of angled toward the engine. I just bolted the two side bolts on, marked the hole, removed, and drilled it.

Holes are present and line up, just making sure it was that easy. Once I coerce the a/c lines into their new and permanent position, should be good to go.

This alone on top of the carb is too tall. However, I've got one for the top of my sniper and it's perfect for that.
