What do these aftermarket horns sound like? Beep? Toot? Meep? Mowooga? Help... :flipoff2:

Man, Tex, that is a hard thing to describe.... They sound more like a big Toyota. They remind me of my Sequoia or my buddy's new Tundra - I think that is what I like most about them - they sound stock, but better.

I've heard the Hella's and I was debating getting a pair of those because they sound great too, but to me the Hella tone is more European, like I'd find on a premium BMW or an Audi. Nothing wrong with that - I just want my horn sound to match my truck and these Mitsu horns do exactly that...

When you honk the horn and somebody looks in their mirror they won't be surpsirse to see [ ][ ]=TOYOTA=[ ][ ] in their rearview mirror. Does that make sense??

Some of the other aftermarket horns I've heard sound like they belong on a domestic pickup, a tugboat or an 18-wheeler - Nothing wrong with that, but when I honk my horn I want people to think "oh, that's where it came from..."

Since horns are meant to get people's attention and avert danger I figure the sound should match the vehicle and these do just that. I may be over-thinking it but oh-well...

The Mitsus sound "right" to me - but it is totally a personal preference thing...

Hope that helps hombre.

By the way TX, your rig looks awesome.... thinking about going from 33x12.50's to 33x10.50's myself...

Thanks for giving me the low down on these... I'm still on the fence.

Not at all, that is the fence I'm on... Do I want a horn that will avert danger or do I want a horn that will cause accidents? :hhmm:

Thanks for the compliment! When I was looking for tires I was torn between 10.5 or 12... My logic could be way off but I figured if tall/skinny tires were good enough for most farm and military vehicles they should meet my needs.

To me, they sound more like a horn off a 60's car. It's loud, but not annoying and they get people's attention.

Luckily the place where I bought it had it and others on display and you could hear them in person. That place is no longer in business.

Good luck

Alright gents.
Swapped out my stock horns today for a new Hella horn set. Hella set looks pretty high speed next to the stock '86 set. Hella came with a switch, or relay of some sort, which I did not install. Just hooked up directly into the existing wiring. Works fine.
So my question is....will having not installed this relay-whats-it have an adverse effects?

You'll most likely get more volume if you wire in the relay. It's a pretty simple task. There are instructions all over. Even the stock horns might sound better when they get enough current to them (which is the purpose of the relay). Horns take more current to run than you'd think and, like lights, will only benefit from having a relay in the circuit.

It won't go through the steering wheel. The horn button only activates the relay by powering the magnetic coil and will only see that current (small). The current to the horn all flows between the battery and horn through the contacts in the relay that are designed to carry 30 amps.

P.S. I need to order one of your headlamp harnesses...

Sorry about the pictures not showing up. Should be fixed now.
