Nice update! Glad to hear you're getting it back together!

Thanks guys, especially beno, head turned out to be perfect.
Odd thing; it had been milled before, and whoever did it did a really bad job, it was 6 thousands out of square, We flattened it right out to match the cam run with no problem. But if you know who did the previous machine work I would avoid using them again. ;p

yooper, check with beno to see if he has another head for you!
I found this place as well:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/TOYOTA-LAND-CRUISER-1HZ-CYLINDER-HEAD-brand-new-bare-/260877091363

Might be a cheap chinese knockoff though.
Take all the parts out to Witch Lake and send me a plane ticket, I'll put it all back together for you. :p

Yes, beno is sourcing all of my parts, and found me a head. And pistons. And a cam. And bearings. And lots of gaskets. :)

Your mine truck engine was a lemon?
I hope to god I don't have to do my 75s 1hz anytime soon.

It was just worn out. Really, really worn out. I don't want to hijack Kevin's thread any more. I will put the details in my build thread at some point.

That sucks.

Kevin, you do quality work. I am really enjoying this thread at your misfortune. Really really cool to see this being done. Keep up the good work.

glad it worked for you .. the only thing I don't like in the front design on those engines it's the water pump .. one less bolt and you don't need to mess with timing stuff to replace it ..

Yooper, How did ordering the parts from Toyota turn out in comparison to Kevin's rebuild kit end up in terms of price.

I am close to ordering the same kit that Kevin did plus seals and a few other bits from Beno and CruiserDan.

I am having my HZ rebuilt as well, wish i had the time to do it myself.

thanks

My situation re: parts prices is very different, so I'm afraid I have no useful info.

If it was me in your situation I'd do what you are planning.

Thanks Yooper, that's what I will do.

Ok, seems like it's all set.
I ran up and down the hill outside our house a bunch of times (about 20 miles worth) and then drained the break-in oil. It was black but not gritty. :p No leaks, nothing weird that I noticed yet. Performance got a bit better as the trips progressed, the rings really seemed to seat in.
I've got run-in oil in there now (non synthetic), did a compression test after the last test run and all the cylinders are very even, will check again after the next oil change to see if the compression has gone up.

I also installed another EGT probe in front of the turbo, I got this one:
http://thesensorconnection.com/et-p...be-diesel-biodiesel-fast-response-18-diameter

Since it would thread into the port that was already there. Before I just had the VDO gauge and thermocouple set and this thermo reads much faster, immediate response really, seems very nice. There is a solid 300* difference between the readings pre, and post turbo. I had figured there was about 200*, but the difference is fairly consistent at least.

Not a hijack at all, this was supposed to be an info thread, so no problem

Gee, thanks. :flipoff2:
It was a nice process, really a great engine to work on, would just have preferred for it to need to be done when I could afford it and not when I needed the truck.

I was thinking the same thing, but everything else is so good it's a decent compromise. You've got to give them credit for splitting the timing belt case at least though, you really don't have to remove all that much to get to the pump.

It's far too soon to tell but the Engines Australia kit really does seem like a quality set. All the bearings were brand-name. Seals and gaskets seemed to be quality. Things were reasonably priced. I just did not want to trust the non-toyota oil seals so I spent the extra to get the OE ones from Mr. T. Other than that it's all from the kit. The parts set was very inclusive. About the only thing not included were new copper crush washers for the vacuum pump oil pipe.

It also came with a bunch of other nice items, namely all the lubes, sealants, plasti gauge, and if you notice even a pack of peppermints (they were quite good btw :p):

I'm familiar with assembly lube but I can do nothing but sing praises for that little tube of "o ring and oil seal grease", never seen that before. Toyota oil seals can be a pain to get in place, with that stuff you can push them in with your fingers and get things perfectly lined up, even with big awkward seals like the rear main. Amazing stuff.

Now you tell me!

It actually took me a minute to figure out what they were, opening things up; "what are these little nubs, descant, cleaners for something, what the hell, they say peppermints on them, is that ausie slang for some engine part....????"

I guess it's the british influence, a snack for when you're tinkering on the engine in your shed. :p

That's pretty funny they included mints in the kit, lol!

any updates Kev?
Out of curiosity did you buy special oil for the break in or just pails of say Rotella?

Seems ok still.
I ran a break-in specific oil for the runs up and down the hill, then I just switched to normal non-synthetic Delo for the run-in.

Still runs quiet and smooth, not a drop of a leak or weep from anything, that's always a nice feeling.

I do have one nagging concern though, it seems as though I have to glow the truck to get it started every time, even if it's been parked for just a few minutes.

My immediate reaction was that compression must still be down but I've also been having weak starts from an electrical standpoint since the rebuild, so it could be that compression is actually up and the starter/batteries are having a hard time giving the engine a good enough spin to fire things off. It used to be that i would just turn the key for one second, the motor would catch on the first compression stroke, now it does a whump, whump, whump, whump, fire. During the rebuild I also got around to removing the ACSD from the injection pump so I've been wondering if that changed the starting characteristics at all as well.

Can't decide which I think it is so I've just been driving it to see what changes.

Thanks for the oil info.

My guess would be compression, what is it at right now or at least last time you checked?

Did you retime your IP after removing the ACSD. Knowing you, you probably did after a full rebuild.:meh: Are your batteries in good health? I just put new batteries in and it starts better than before. Still need to get my valves done and retime my IP. I am going to go finish that on my dads truck now.
