Good thoughts, guys. Luckily it's definitely not the throw out bearing, it doesn't change when I push the clutch, and I don't think it's an accessory pulley/bearing, since I can kinda localize it to the carb/intake with a stethoscope. I may squirter around with some ether and see if I can verify it's a leaky carb gasket.
I suspect that anyway mainly because when I primed the carb pouring a little gas in, I saw it get wet around the base....
I'm getting ready to cruise to the car wash now and put a bunch of dog hair and varmint poop in their vacuum system haha
I own a 2004 Dodge (Mercedes) sprinter van with a 2.7 liter inline 5 cyl turbo diesel engine. Currently has about 350,000 miles on it and I bought it at 300,000 miles. For the longest time it had a noise very similar to what you are describing but it only happened under boost. Eventually I fixed it and it was a bad exhaust manifold gasket. Basically when the boost increased the exhaust was leaking out of the #1 exhaust port at the manifold gasket....as the exhaust passed over the gasket it acted like a reed valve in an instrument and created that horrible noise. Your truck is clearly not a turbo but it could be doing something along those lines if you have a bad gasket or even a crack somewhere.

Still got that grungy old truck look, but it's soooo much nicer after cleaning it up! I put another 40 miles or so on it today, and it drives like a dream.
Even got it on the highway and cruised at 65 for a good 15 minutes, and it was smooth as silk and seemed very happy to get to be useful and see the world again. I think this is going to be a great vehicle again.

I wonder if I have this going on too. I replaced my power steering pump at the same time I de-smogged and installed headers with a remflex gasket and a holley sniper. I've had a turbo-like sound ever since I fired the engine back up. I thought it was the Chinese PS pump or the new carb hat I'm using, but now I'm wondering if there is in fact a leak in the headers. They were lack luster in quality and I didn't have time to really do anything about it. I drove the truck across the country with all my belongings, so whatever it is isn't too detrimental.

This... same thing happened to my BJ75 after I welded this pretty crappy "log" exhaust manifold together for it after I turbo'd it. Was a horrid noise and I thought my $50 junkyard turbo had already given up the ghost and was self-destructing. Figured it was the exhaust manifold gasket after a while and drove it 9,500 miles across the country screaming like a banshee everywhere we went.

In the second clip, of this video you can hear the noise, see if it sounds somewhat similar yet keep in mind that its also mixed with the sound of the turbo

and here's the aftermath of it all

Yeah man, that sounds similar. I should go have a closer look, cuz I'm about to drive from Orlando to Bozeman in a few weeks. lol

Today I drove the Cruiser, aka 'Louise', aka 'Wheezy' about 150 miles, some backroad cruising, and about 70 miles of interstate, and drove on in to work after gallavanting around a bit and getting some things taken care of.
The car runs awesome, although at startup the electric fuel pump is beginning to make some louder noise than it was previously, and that whistle/screech is still there, but now I've been able to ride around with the windows down, and have found that it is only there at idle, or when the engine isn't under a load. I found a smoke kit at work just now, and will use it to pinpoint the leak tomorrow or Friday.
I also filled up that big ass gas tank lol.
Mid grade was $4.40.a gallon, and it held $100 worth from near empty. OUCH.
I don't guess I'll be commuting in this car very often...

Swap the electric to OEM mechanical. Silent and stout.
I would if I was planning to stay with a carburetor, but there is EFI in my future. I'll have to buy something that makes 60 psi for that, so I'll probably stick with a cheap electric pump for now.

I sold a trailer to a guy at work today, and didn't want to pull the 18ft tandem axle car trailer with my Subaru like I did when I bought it, so I pulled it to work with Wheezy. That engine rules. 70mph, cruising right along like it's nothing, smooth, quiet, and enough pedal left to pass people when needed. I am very happy.

I also found my screech, it was an intake leak at the carb base. I didn't have time today to make a gasket after catching up on the maintenance on my daily driver, but I smeared a little grey RTV over the spot where it was leaking for now. Now it doesn't sound like a cat being murdered while idling, lol. I'll make a gasket when it starts whistling again, or when I get around to doing the EFI, whichever comes first, lol.

I get this far into the damn thing and find this ad...
I wish I could just buy that one! Dang it, lol. By the time I find a way, I'm sure it will be gone. It's less than 5 miles from my house. 😪

The one takeaway from that add is that 15 years ago it looked good

Today I went to western Missouri to meet a fellow Mud member who had some decent fj60 seats in the right color at a very fair price. Jim was extremely cool to talk to, although my kid was being a bit of a whiner after being in the car all day, so we didn't get to talk as long as I would have liked, lol.
I was quite impressed by his small fleet of Land Cruisers, which included a 100 series, a very nicely setup FZJ80, and and FJ40 that was truly something for him to be proud of, and me to be envious of! Absolutely stunning the way it is setup!
Along with the seats, Jim sent me home with a nice condition factory skidplate for an FJ60, which mine was missing, as well as a good heater core! What a great guy, and a great step forward in fixing up my old 60!
On the way home, the wife and I got into a somewhat deep conversation about a potential diesel/5 speed swap. 😲🤯
Since I had been talking about buying a brand new truck, she realizes that a full build complete with drivetrain update would negate the need for a new vehicle, as well as make this one sustainable as a driver rather than only being able to afford to drive it short distances once in a blue moon due to atrocious fuel economy.
That is a conversation that may well turn into something glorious...

diesel swap and a 5 speed, other than just being dope as hell, will pay off in the long run with gas prices if it were to be your daily driver... seen some old threads on mud where people did the numbers and some paid off the cost of their swap in gas savings within 2-3 years and were just saving money from there on out. if you were to put as much money as a brand new truck is, or even half of one into this 60, it would hold its value much better and be much more reliable for the years to come. Hope you get something figured out

Since having the conversation with my wife I've gotten a couple of quotes for shops to do a 4bt swap, as well as finding a guy selling all the stuff to do the swap on Facebook at a fair price, and I've been looking into doing the swap myself.
It is all pretty feasible!
Hopefully within a few months I'll be headed down the diesel swap path!
Next question, what could I sell my running 2F with weber carb and long tube header and the 4 speed for?
I'll need to sell that stuff to help pay for the diesel stuff. It runs awesome....

Consider a Mercedes OM617 turbo as well or even the new R2.8 which is new, clean, and a nice modern engine with comprehensive parts package. R2.8 is a pile of cash up front but all other costs are the same. Another alternative would be sourcing a Toyota Turbo Diesel...one of the newer ones would be a nice improvement and easier to install given Toyota parts and support.

I think I've made a deal with a guy...
Very exciting! It will be a while. Maybe a couple of months, but I think this may be in my future...

Just happened to find a guy pulling a 4bt/nv4500 out of his 62 in favor of LS power.
Gonna do my best to snatch it up and stick it under mah hood.
This might get real cool...

Start researching "Fluid Dampr" there is another 4BT thread on mud where the engine vibration was excessive and the owner installed one of the fluid dampr's and reported a positive decrease in vibration.

Good call! I knew these things were vibey after driving my buddy's wrangler with a 4bt. We went to fluid damper motor mounts and it was a night and day improvement! I already knew I wanted that as part of the recipe! The last thing I want to do is ruin my cruiser with a sloppy vibrating tractor engine, but I will make some sacrifices in the name of diesel torque and fuel economy.

Today I spent some time splicing wires in the dash where I had found rodent damage before even trying to get the Cruiser running, and put my glovebox back together. I love how the dash looks in these things when complete, and the t case instruction sticker is a great reminder that this thing is meant to do more than just drive to the store. FJ60's are built for adventure, and rugged was still a bigger ingredient than comfort was in those days.
I've made some deals to sell a few things, and as they go, money for this project will become available.
I think one of my motorcycles will sell in the next couple of weeks, and if it does, that will pay for my Cummins swap parts.
I believe I'll hoard up all my new interior parts as I go as well, but won't put them in until the diesel swap is complete and reliable, so I don't get the new stuff all greasy.
I got my heater core to quit leaking with some stop leak, but just to be safe, I'll go ahead and swap in my spare before the new interior goes in as well, just to keep from spilling coolant on new carpet.
