Well, after about 4 years of being pretty reliable, the starter for this thing has stopped working. Barely even a click.
Called O'Reilly's and learn that it only had a one year warranty, and a new one is $315.
Dang it.
I Guess I'm glad it decided not to work here in my yard, rather than in a remote area 2,000 miles from home...

There is a fix where you can replace the contacts/plunger (?) pieces in the starter solenoid, it's often the problem. Easy fix, the parts were available from Toyota. I did mine years ago and don't recall the exact parts, but search it up. Might be a quick and easy and cheap fix.

That is exactly what I need to do, but this starter is for a Blue Bird school bus, and not a Toyota item. I just need to figure out where to get the bits to fix the solenoid innards and I'll be set. For now, I've just ordered another starter, and plan to fix this one myself as a spare.

I think a first gen 12 valve starter will work. Maybe an inexpensive alternative to fine a used one, and rebuild your current one.

My flywheel is not the same as the 6bt flywheel. It's some kind of retrofit thing that uses a Chevy small block sized clutch with a Dodge center, for an nv4500 that originally had a Dodge v8 on it... I have no idea how I figured out which starter to get, but it was for a Blue Bird school bus, and happened to be 12v, when the one I had was 24v. I used the 24v starter for the core charge...

Always an adventure figuring out what works with what on these conversions.

Great thread.
Awesome resurrection tale.
Killer find on that little truck, would love to stumble across something like that.
Very proud of you as a fellow father most of all, you are crushing it.

Closing out a great weekend of camping, wheeling, and dirtbikes with my kid in East Tennessee. 60 has been kicking ass, but I did get a little more rocker damage... I guess I'll eventually cut the driver side out and replace it, and then install sliders 🫪

Windrock? Which trail?
Glad to see you enjoying it - hope all is well.

Dan that was on Haley Rd at Prentice Cooper WMA near Chattanooga.
Great to hear from you! I hope life is going great for you! Have you made any progress on your Ford build?
Slow progress but progress yeah. I keep scope creeping into more mods before getting a runner. Engine and trans is mounted but I'm doing a new rear suspension now. One day 😂
