A preemptive :flipoff2:.

Long time listener, first time caller.

Got myself an 80, and want to spruce up the paint a bit. It's not all that bad, but could use a cleaning, polish and wax. It's got a slight haze and the gloss on the clearcoat is slightly dull. I've got some Turtle Wax (green) rubbing/buffing compound. Do you think this is a bit harsh?

What other products, or procedures do you guys suggest.

Welcome to the board mkfour. Where you from?

On the wax thing, im not a detailer so i couldn't really recommend anything.. but i've used Meguir's in the past and loved their products. If you are thinking of using the green can of Turtle Wax compound... i would be very careful!!! That stuff can screw up your paint if you don't use it correctly. I would wait and see what others chime in with for their recommendations.

Also, no affiliation with expedition exchange or blaster.. but they have some new products that they sell..

Why is it that people feel they must claim "No Affliation" blablabla?

Is it REALLY necassary? Seems silly to me!

clay treatment?

To clarify, I had some Turtlewax branded polishing compound. It's in a white plastic bin with a green label. I also have the same in a red label, which I think is a harsher compound. I've used it in the past and it seemed to work fine, but I'm more wondering about the long term consequences.

I've heard about the clay before, there's still some light left and I might go to Pep Boys.

In the past I've used a mild cleaner, a polish and then used wax. It was Meguiars or Mothers. This worked great, but then again the car was new.

By the way I'm in LA/OC for the time being. Will be relocating within the year, but will still be in Socal.

Bitch, bitch, bitch. :flipoff2:

x 3 on Meguiars. I have used these for the last 13 or so years and have been very happy with them. They have saved me from myself as well since they make it very hard to mess up your paint if you use common sense. You can get near the same results as if you use a clay bar. The big factor is if you feel roughness akin to sandpaper when you rub your hand over the paint after a wash then you should go ahead with the clay bar, if not than you can get away with one of the various cut cleaners.

FWIW I used the Turtle wax rubbing compound once a long time ago and seriously damaged the finish in a very short period of time.

Oh yeah, :flipoff2: one for you too since you are new. Welcome. :D

Took some pictures after I bought the rig. I'm sure you guys already know what it looks like. Bone stock, no accidents, no dings, no scratches.

170K on the clock, 1997.

How do the axles look?

Some leakage underneath.

Inside is clean.

Engine bay.

I've already removed the damage multiplier and taillight guards. Removed the third row and belts. While I was at it I replaced the subwoofer with one I had laying around.

I plan to build this into more of an expedition rig. No heavy duty rock crawling, but a few medium-core trails might be in my future.

I'm a graduate student getting my MS, so I'm on a tight budget. I'll have to build it up slowly. Not too much gear, a bumper, fridge, lift and bigger tires are in my plans. Maybe a winch and sliders. I've been into cruisers for a while and always wanted one ever since my first job as a kid. I worked for a guy doing construction and he had a pristine 60. I've lurked for some time now, and now that I've got my rig I can officially join in on the fun.

Hope to learn a lot from you guys.

Welcome, :flipoff2::flipoff2:
Post up in the "Official SoCal 80s Thread". First mod should be some sliders. It opens up a ton or trails and some piece of mind. You want to protect your investment and have some fun. Hope to see you on one of our runs.

ditch the turtle....there's a reason Meguiar's sponsors the Barrett Jackson events.

oh, and welcome!

your axles look normal (a little juicy)...but for the guys on MUD, they'd have you enter a 12 step program instantly.

search for birf jobs and axle seals, there's huge amounts of info including a whole set of part numbers you can buy as a kit. Don't even think about getting a quote for the job. it'll ring up to 1500 bucks before you can say "WTF is a wiper seal?" But since you wanna do it, the next thing is watching all the guys tell you to switch out the axles for longfields and change the gearing and buy 37"s and yadda yadda, yadda.

I ended up using Meguiars cleaner/wax. I'm surprised at how good the product works. Next week I'll go in with Meg's fine cut cleaner, polish and wax.

I cleaned up the undercarriage a bit a few days ago. I wanted to see where it was leaking from. After numerous rags, most of it cleaned up and as of yet there are no leaks. So I wonder where the oil was coming from since it looked wet and somewhat new and constant.

I also checked my diff's. Rear was good, but the front was bad. I figure a good combination of grease/oil. I'm new to this, but I'm thinking the outer seal is good, but the inner seal is a done for. So I just changed the fluid and will check again after a tankful of gas.

I guess it goes to show that a visual inspection of your axles on the outside doesn't say much.

I also checked the PHH while I was down there. It looks to be in very good shape, but it'll get done.

Welcome. You in So. Cal?

I know of a great place to get some tree branch pin stripping.

Hope to see you on a run.
