@bamabrock @aaronrules @marcfj60 @Bloomer .... I'll be up there in Silverton starting on that Monday 7/22. I'll be rolling in from the north as I'll head up to Salida first and then come down via gravel routes from Marshall Pass to Los Pinos into Lake City and then over Cinnamon down to Silverton on that Sunday. I'll be running a bunch of the non-HIH trails (Maggie, Minnie, Eureka, Burns Gulches....Stony Pass to Kite Lake....Kendall Mountain....Ophir to Bolam Pass and Lime Creek Rd). Might even head down to Ouray and do Yankee Boy/Governor and Sydney Basins. Anyone up there at that time is more than welcome to join me. I've been on all these trails multiple times.

This sounds like a good idea. I still have to finalize my time off from work, which probably won't be able to happen until sometime in June, but I am going to try to get out there as early as possible and maybe stay late if possible as well!

I could probably head down early.

I have a few and will bring one just in case sleeping inside the truck sucks. It's going to be a nice/different change of pace in only having to worry about myself on a trip like this!
Make sure to bring that tent! I know some like sleeping in their trucks but you may not love it so much! I hate it! No head room, terrible arrangement during wet weather! Where will your gear go to give your sort of flat 25" wide bed? Sucks! I rather have a ground tent with a cot and a sleeping bag!

For everyone considering heading into Silverton early, remember Kendall is not available until the 24th! Everyone would need to find other camping/lodging arrangements while waiting the D day!

I have a dealer in Dallas that has 4 in stock. Going to head up and check them out this weekend. If I had the time and wasn't such a "convenience enthusiast", I'd follow your route and build my own to save a few bucks.

@geanes did you make it up to that dealer this weekend? What did you think? I am looking at trailer options and don't think I'll really have time to DIY one while also trying to prepare my 'new to me' vanilla 100. I like the look of the Freespirit Adventure trailer too but they're a little pricier.

(feel free to just PM me, I don't want to clog this thread)

Excellent. I'm game. Might be a good opportunity to give the 16 year old some driving time on trails when we aren't pressed for time and have 15 rigs in tow.

Whereabouts in PA are you? There are at least 3 of us from PA heading out!

I'm towing my trailer and taking the family out a few weeks ahead of time.

Darn, didn't realize that was you! The PA contingent is 4 strong. I know there's at least one more from MD. Good for the east coast!!

He bought the @benc Dissent bumper from me, the one I never got around to installing because I instead bought a 200 and had Ben/Dissent go crazy with front and rear bumpers and skids :)

Yeah man, you have any other 100 accessories just laying around collecting dust? I could really use some sliders and skids... haha

My question a small sidetrack from the thread regarding this years event as it is full. With a view to next year can any previous attendees answer this. My wife is deathly afraid of heights and I really would like to make this event at some point. She has suggested hanging back in the campground while I hit the trails etc. if we were to attend. Question is does anyone else's wife/partner/family/dog do this? I fear she would be bored out of her mind without some company. Sorry for the sidetrack, pm is fine if you don't want to clutter up the thread

Maybe take her on some more visually tame trails in the area and see if she wants to drive. I'm more fearful riding personally. In my opinion, the paved roads are more dangerous than the offroad and passes most will drive in Colorado.

x2! 550 heading south from Ouray is by far the scariest drive of the event!

I had my two young boys there last year (7 month old, 2.5yr old) and we stayed back at camp one day and had a nice time. It was kind of fun being the only ones there!

One nice thing about camp is that you're walking distance to the entire town so I'm sure she could entertain herself for a few days. She could take a train ride down to Durango one day, hang out in Silverton one day, and then join you on some of the trails without shelf rides that she might be more comfortable on.

So excited to make it this year.
I saw a few people brought dogs at HIH7 and i skipped HIH8 because of getting a puppy. How do you guys bring the dogs along? Trying to figure out if i can bring him or not. I know he will love it out there just trying to figure out how it works. I can't imagine him being comfortable on the trails in the car. Any suggestions?

I just throw him in the back with his bed and he seems to do alright. My pup has always been pretty good in the car though, and he's old now (11) and usually content just to be with the family.

Bring the pup along! Sydney went with me at HIH8 and he had a blast. He rode in his kennel in the back of the rig on the way up. He rode in the back seat on all the trails and got to get out and explore at various stops. We stayed in a hotel last year and he stayed there with us. We are camping this year and he'll stay in his kennel in the awning room at night.

As long as he/she is fine riding in the car, the trails won't bother them. Dogs don't have the same irrational fears as we humans do. I would definitely get the pup acclimated to riding in the car though. Start taking him/her out on short trips. Maybe go on a short weekend camping getaway with the pup. I drive 14 hours from Texas for this event. Sydney gets anxious after several hours (as do I) and we pull over every few hours (necessary for fuel too) to stretch our legs and go potty.

Are one of the stock bumpers more of a problem than the other one? If I was going to upgrade one, which should I change?

In the rear I have the factory trailer hitch.

The rear hitch does a pretty good job when you bash it against rocks, the front doesn’t have such protection. That being said they have purposes other than armor. The rear in particular allows you to relocate your spare for both convenience and allows you to pull your spare even if the back of the truck is in a bad spot. It allows you to potentially carry gas, a hi lift, water, ladder for a roof tent or rack, fold out countertops for Camping, etc. depends on your needs.

Okay that's good to hear. When he turned 6 months old in the fall we went on an 7 hour drive to the blue ridge parkway and spent 4 days driving, hiking, and camping. He did great on that trip once we got him situated in the back so he could look out the window. We realized on that trip he gets little sick when he couldn't see out the windows. I think if I remember from HIH7 it's about 24 hour drive for us. Since that trip in the fall hes gotten to the point where he no longer drools excessively. I guess it helps he goes to work with me once or twice a week and that's a 50 min drive one way.
