Recently over the past month and half my 96' started very quiet knock that grabbed my attention this past week as it got noticeably louder. I've been learning my way around vehicles as I work on this thing so my knowledge is limited. The engine is believed to have 130,000 miles, so still pretty early in its life. I'll link a couple videos below with hopes of any information and advice.

In park/idling:

Driving (inside cab):

The knocking gets faster with the revs and is noticeably louder when it gets to 1100 rpms.

I've already ordered an oil test kit from a lab to see if I can get any information out of that. I have access to other vehicles to drive in the meantime (which I'm assuming is recommended).

What's your timing currently set at?

Have you recently done anything to/anything with the power steering pump ?

I have that same sound. been driving it like that for 4K miles or so. It gets more quiet when the engine warms up. Ive tried removing all belts. New PS pump. I will be replacing the steering rack as well. evidently that was the cause of someone else's noise. Mine is leaking slightly so it needed it anyway. I have no loss of power and it cruises on the highway great.. I don't want to tear my engine apart so would be great if you figured it out!

My code reader says my timing is at 4.5. No idea how accurate that is, though. I'll do a proper check with my timing gun when I get a chance. If believe I checked it at a 3 when I first got the vehicle but I don't really remember.

Also I've never messed with the steering pump in the 10k/5 months I've owned it. It needs to be replaced though, its leaked a bit.

Did you put a scope to the engine? Does the sound appear to come from the top end passenger side?

The reason I asked, after I installed my rebuild motor in my previous truck I had a sound just like a light knocking, similar to yours. I was devastated thinking I had done something wrong. When I awoke the next am and calmer heads prevailed, I started to diagnose and found PS pump very low on fluid even after i filled. Air had bled out and I was down of fluid. Topped it up and it ran like a champ, noise was gone ! MAJOR sigh of relief.... Just a hunch for you ?

If you have a new power steering pump there is a part that needs removed and pressed onto your new pump. If it isn't pressed on just right I have heard of engine noise symptoms. It could be a place to look. Can you isolate the area in the engine making noise?

Yes the PS pump gear can cause trouble. If not installed correctly and if there is even slight damage. A couple guys on mud have had this issue. I did not replace mine but it might be the last resort.

I replaced my power steering pump with a new OEM one. Didn't replace the gear. Now I have a dreaded tick/knock sound, WTF?

Austin,
Its usually the gear not the pump. and the sound is more of a knock. if you listen to the top video you can hear it. In my case I suspect i damaged the gear before resintalling. i dropped it off the bench and all looked good but even the slightest damage seems to cause it. At that time I didnt know about this issue and didnt really inspect it. I havent had a chance to change mine. Truck runs great just makes that terrible noise.
