Ok, so I am putting out a feeler on my 1996 FZJ80 -- I purchased this from original owner ... 5 years ago ( I'm guessing ).

4.5L 1FZ-fe / Daily driver
Working Factory electronic lockers & Center Diff Lock
Arb bumper ( some rock rash )
( warn x9001 winch & Arb roof rack not included in sale, but could be negotiated )
Custom overlanding platform included
( I do have the second row seats etc. that will be included in a sale )
Only a couple rust bubbles in paint on the rear hatch.

All in all very solid chassis and body overall.
Shifts smooth
She has some bumps and bruises, scratches etc. but is a great camping / expedition rig.
Yes it's dirty.
Has an Old Man Emu lift to clear the larger tires ( unsure of exact lift height )
BFG A/T Tires are in great shape on FJ steelies ( using small wheel spacers for correct back spacing )
PHH is done
Blue fan clutch installed
Ultra Gauge shows truck runs consistently 183 - 195 degrees under most circumstances.
I will get 199-201 on steep Colorado grades.
Seats are very good under the tuff duck covers

I want to be completely up front about this truck in that I believe it's an amazing rig, but
it's a 20 year old truck and not free from issues.

Issues that I am aware of:
AC not working -- I live in cold climate so don't care, I'm sure it could be sorted.
ABS was kicking a code so I pulled the pin rather than go further
Birfs gimme some light clicks when lockers are engaged
( I have replacements that will be included )
Front axle needs some seals
Rear "Landcruiser" emblem fell off 3 weeks ago -- metal needs cleaning and new badge applied.

My Concerns:
The engine has a slight, yet audible " click / rattle " under certain RPMs 2500 - 3000 and it seems to be consistant with load applied ( sort of goes away if I let off the pedal ) -- I am almost certain that it's always had it since I've owned it, but it's worth noting that I might be hearing it more these days -- not sure if I am just keen to it or it indicates something new. Mechanic said it could be wrist pin & the issue could be fine for another 100k or make itself very well known in 5 miles -- I have no idea.

I'm a reasonable person, but I know the collective value in this truck so if lowballing is your thing, please, save us both the time.

Extras could be negotiated, I have other plans for the winch & roof rack.
I also have other 80 series parts that could be negotiated.

Please PM me for more info / pics / etc or to talk on the phone.
Clean Colorado title in hand.
I'm not desperate to sell, in fact I love this rig, but we just picked up a new Bronco project and I am running out of space really really fast.

thanks for looking

Oooooh what year is that bronco in the background? Nice 80 by the way.

I don't have the 3rd row ( i actually gave them away ) and think it would be easy to get some replacements in the same way ( free or for a 12 pack )

The original wheels were flaking off clear coat so i got rid of them. That being said I do have some nice aluminum rims that would fit, but i would have to check on the tire size. I can send pics of those if you're interested, they are powdercoated black.

Few questions. Did you do the work yourself or have maintenance receipts? Any issues with undercarriage? Where was it owned previous to you? BTW I used to live in the Boat, lived on Pine Street- worked 3 jobs (the hardware store on the way to the airport and on the mountain for a free pass) and was broke as he.. but it was fun- still trying to get back there since 98.

Awesome good to hear from the Steamboat expats!

Undercarriage is solid, colorado truck.
I did all the work on the things listed.
Phh, arb, overlanding platform, lift, fan clutch etc, oil changes, cdl, wheels. The Cruiser was from the front range. I bought it from the original owner who walked away from a major commercial jet crash so I think the truck has some good mojo.

I really like this but that concern section is a blocker for further away newb like me.

i completely understand. I drive it every day, but mud is a special community and deserves full transparency, hence the "concerns" section.
Thanks!

GLWS!

I am also in the market to add an 80 to the garage and the "Concerns/Issues" section is keeping me away from it as well. That being said, I can't thank you enough for being transparent on here. There are a lot of people that would let a known engine noise like that just slide. Thats good karma for you. GLWS, we will be up in the 'Boat in June for the Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup; amongst the mayhem I'll see if I can pop you a PM and get you a beer at Sunpies.

Thanks, I'm not terribly worried about the noise and the concept of not mentioning it to this crew never crossed my mind.

i'm Pretty sure i've been driving it for five years, this way, all over Colorado and Utah, but now that I'm planning to sell it, i might as well figure out what's what. I am planning to get with another local mudder to see if I can pinpoint it a little better. Hopefully i'll have an update on here soon.

Love me some Sunpies Hurricanes!!

UPDATE to this thread.

I asked some local ( and extremely knowledgable ) mud members to go over the engine noise with me.
It was decided that a smart course of action would be to get inside the top end to make sure nothing random was loose up there or making noise.
In the process the valves were checked ( all within spec ) and the valve cover gasket, Dizzy o-ring and various other seals were replaced.
Result: Oil leaks fixed -- but there was no smoking gun found as to the origin of the noise in the top end.

We therefore concluded that the noise is most likely a wrist pin rattle, not a bearing or anything like that.
The sound comes and goes with RPMs. I do truly believe that this sound has been with the truck since I've owned it ( many many years )
In an effort to sort some things out prior to any kind of sale, I've been paying attention to it more & wanting to understand what it was.

I'm still wanting to sell this truck as I have no more space at my house and need to fund other projects.
Interested buyers, please contact me, lets discuss the details and work on a fair price that makes everyone happy.
I fullly understand the hesitation by some in committing to this rig.

For reference I looked up a few used engines this week and they seem to be in the 1250-1800 range depending on miles and location.
I'd think a remove & replace ( while a big job no doubt ) would be a completely viable option considering all the other pros that are associated with this rig.

PRICE NEGOTIABLE

Thanks!

I bought a 80 about 5 years ago. That had a bad rod bearing. It would go away as rpm increased. So I think you are correct in it not being a bearing issue. Mine sounded like a diesel on start up. I drove it like that daily for over two years with no problem.
BTW I love those wheels and tires. Can you share what those are?

8 brand for a weird noise and front the axle needing rebuild.....

Glws!

Glws!

His dyslexic and devoid of spelling post was clowning you, basically stating good luck trying to get 8 grand out of a rig with a weird engine noise and needing a front axle rebuild. Just reading between the lines there.

Yup I hear that!
It was the "Glad!" that got changed to "Glws!" that initially had me scratching my head....
anywho.

I'm offering up about as transparent of an ad as you could hope for in this day & age.
It's usually a crap shoot...
wipe down the axles, add a quart of lucas oil, & on a test drive any one of us could buy a rig with various undisclosed issues and get duped.

I'm at least talking about what I know are the known issue like you guys are all my friends, so we can all stay friends :)
As stated the price is negotiable on this truck, I encourage anyone interested to contact me and negotiate a fair price for both parties involved.
I realize It certainly won't be a rig for just anyone to hop in and hammer on the rocks...haha.

Thanks y'alls.
