I have a 92 4runner 22re. And it is way to underpowered. Is there anything I can do to give it a little more hp for highways. Is it even worth fixing it up?

Start off with...
Having the right sized tires for the gearing
A good tune up
Reset the timing

If that is still not enough...
A larger AFM (Supra)
A RV type of Cam
Headers and free flowing exhaust.

If that is still not enough...
Turbo with a stand alone ECU and mega squirt.

IF that is still not enough...
3.4 Swap.

If that is still not enough...
3.4 with a TRD supercharger

I have 225/75 r15s on it right now. Have a small leak at the manifold. Thinkin of replacing with header. Have 1 3/4 inch pipe with a high flow cat. O2 sensor rustler out and fell of so currently getting 5 mpg. Any suggestions on a muffler?

Engnbldr over at 4x4wire has a good write up in one of his posts on what to do with the exhaust system on a 22RE. Unless you wish to change the RPMs of the main power band of the engine, keep the stock exhaust header. This is to preserve the exhaust flow rates without stalling them. After the exhaust manifold you can make modest increases in size. I think his suggestion was 2" to cat, then 2.25" to muffler, but it's been awhile since I read his posts on the 22RE. I know I linked to them in past posts of mine.

that 4runner is one of the heaviest bodies the 22re was ever put in. it will always be underpowered. a motor swap as norcalborn was alluding to would be the best option. trust me before you throw another dime at that thing. save for a 3rz swap and don't look back.
