Hey guys,

I'm new here and am at my wits end. So i thought i would give this a try in hopes that someone could help me resolve this issue.

The truck ran fine until last thursday, i parked it on thursday and drove my car all weekend. Sunday morning I went out to start the truck and it will not start. The engine cranks fine, and even sounds like it wants to start for a split second but doesnt.

I can smell gas in the tail pipe and am getting fuel pressure at the Cold Start Injector

I have tested spark and it has spark, (Bluish-Purple not orange so i believe it's good spark)

I jumped fP - b+ to ensure it wasn't the fuel pump, and checked for codes.

24 - INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR SIGNAL--OPEN OR SHORT IN INTAKE
AIR TEMP. SIGNAL
--INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE CIRCUIT
--INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR
--ECU

31 - MANIFOLD AND/OR AIRFLOW METER SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT
--AIRFLOW METER/CIRCUIT
--MANIFOLD PRESSURE SENSOR/CIRCUIT
--ECU

43 - STARTER SIGNAL--NO "STA" SIGNAL TO ECU UNTIL ENGINE SPEED
EXCEEDS 800RPM
--IGNITION SWITCH/CIRCUIT
--ECU

I took apart the AFM this evening and tried to start with the flap held open, still won't start.. even tried unplugging the cold start injector. If anyone has any ideas, or can tell me by the present codes it would be much appreciated I really need to get this truck running again. Thanks guys

Where did you test for spark? At a plug, or at the cap? Not firing at all means you either aren't getting spark to all 4. Or aren't getting fuel to all 4... If you have fuel pressure you could be looking at an injector wire issue, or as the code suggest, maybe an ECU issue...

Tested spark at the plugs. The codes for this truck confuse me because they list the IATS, and the AFM, and Start signal to ecu?

Check the grounds especially the one next to the fuse box under the hood that bolts to the fender.

Isn't the pickup assembly in the dizzy related to the start signal? Pull your dist. cap and check to see if there is any copper wire coiled up around the rotor. Mine exploded on me one time, and I think it was giving me the start signal code.

Make sure the connector to the Air Flow Meter it on good. Those codes suggest there is an issue with the AFM. The engine will not run without a start signal from the AFM. Also check the EFI fuse, though the fact you can pull codes suggests the fuse is OK.

Time to learn the ways of the FSM. Electronic copies of the FSMs are linked to in the FAQ thread at the beginning of this section of the forum.

In the FSM engine section there is a description of how to test the AFM to see if it is functional and within specifications. It requires a digital volt meter to test resistances between various pins on the electrical connector. If the AFM checks out, the wiring to it can be the issue.

I don't think it is the AFM, even with it unplugged the engine will start, it will only run for a few seconds until the fuel pressure in the system bleeds off. But with the Fp and B+ pins jumpered, it would start and run.

There is a circuit in the AFM that directly controls the fuel pump. If the AFM does not register air flow it shuts off the fuel pump.

Correct, which is why KLF is suggesting if the fuel pump is bypassed it should run. I see that in the wire diagram. I need to try that.

Yup. The other time the fuel pump runs is when you are cranking the engine, regardless of what the AFM says. So if the AFM fails, the truck will still start, but it will only run for a few seconds then die.

Try it - unplug your AFM and see what happens.
