Howdy folks!

Been a crazy few weeks of trial and error but I wanted to start a thread explaining how I got the 90amp alternator upgrade to work in my 91’ FJ80 without the typical grind and force to fit with the factory 80amp bracket method that so widely seems to be the only answer. Today I’d like to share my method that I have yet to see ever been done (or at least documented here) Although this solution is uncommon it may work for a lot of folks who are having issues getting a solid 80amp and may have a dead 80amp laying around that has the parts needed to make this new method work.

So low and behold I found myself in the predicament that many early FJ80 owners have been through and have unfortunately suffered the same fate when it comes to alternators going bad. Roughly 4 weeks ago I noticed my 80 took a while to crank up early in the morning and didn’t think much of until later that day i filled up with gas and bam, battery voltage dropped enough to not start the vehicle. At first I figured the battery had started to decline but of course after happening a handful of times it was apparent the alternator would no longer charge the battery.

Without much thought i decided to find a replacement online for my bad alternator which lead me to purchasing a 90amp factory Toyota replacement from the folks at Cruiser Teq (highly recommend them if your looking for anything for your Land Cruiser!) upon purchase i thought this would be a straight forward swap but after removing all the belts and pulling my old unit out i realized immediately that the 90amp alternator was different and would not mount up to the existing bracket due to the mounting ears being much more narrow than the factory 80amp alternator. initially i was under the impression that Cruiser Teq sold me the incorrect unit so i contacted and they replied assuring me that the 90amp is a factory upgrade but requires a different mounting bracket for it to work (they prompt this on the product, i simply overlooked and bought without researching)

Being the great business that Cruiser Teq is they offered to swap out with the factory 80amp at no additional cost but i was curious to see if i could get it work as an upgraded unit sounded like the direction i wanted go. This is where issues started to begin. I figured that all i would need for this swap was a 90amp alternator bracket and i would be good to go but after some googling and sourcing part numbers it was more than apparent that this bracket was more than rare and almost impossible to find. This lead to searching many threads on Mud just to realize nobody has actually swapped in a 90amp with the factory bracket. Even with correlating part numbers most parts distributors (Partsouq, Amamyama, Toyota, etc) either listed incorrect brackets as subs or just stated that the part was discontinued (i learned this the hard way purchasing two different brackets that were subbed under the original part number)

Below is an image i got off mud under an existing thread that shows part numbers and visually why the 90amp alternator doesn't fit ( apologies for no credit i will find the OP and credit) i also am including images that show measurements of both mounting ears so you can see that there is a significant difference.

After endless searching for a bracket that may not even exist i was feeling defeated as i did not want to grind up a brand new alternator to get to fit and decided i would do further research and just throw in a 80amp for the time being. i purchased another 80amp alternator upon the 3 other units i already have (1 90 amp, 2 bad, one ND other Toyota reman 2nd hand) and low and behold the new unit i got did not fit due to incorrect connector LOL (assuming for 60/62 series)

below I've included images of all 4 alternators so that fellow users can deceit the differences without spending money like me. I am fairly certain these are the only existing options and orientations for the 80amp alternator.

Now i found myself with 4 different alternators that do not work (that's some luck LOL) so i decided with 4 units i should be able to make at least one working unit which leads me to the whole purpose of this thread.

After comparing all 4 units i noticed that the 90amp Toyota unit and the 80amp ND unit were the most similar and even bolted up together exactly the same.

the ND alternator is very interesting considering that it is an 80amp unit but has no external fan like all other 80amp options you can buy (unfortunately i cannot find a source of where to get this 80amp internal fan alternator but attached is a image of the production sticker) but asides obvious differences with the other 80amp alternators the common dominator with this ND unit and the 90amp Toyota unit was the back plates are identical besides the ear placement. i decided to take the risk and take apart the 90amp alternator to see if i could swap the backs of each alternators and low and behold the 80amp ND alternator back fits and lines up perfectly with the 90amp alternator.

Back mounting plates to the 90amp and the ND 80amp (left to right)

After disassembling both units i swapped over all good components and everything bolted together with no fitment issue, as straightforward as an OEM rebuild. Only thing i suggest is putting the new back piece into the freezer to allow for clearance for the new bearing (will go on regardless but did not want to damage the new bearing hammering it on.) after back plates are swapped i tightened everything down and boom! a 90amp alternator with the proper mounting clearance for the OEM 80amp bracket.

Modified 90amp all buttoned up!

unfortunately i did have to grind down a very small section on the new back plate due to the ear sitting roughly 2mm lower than the front but after some careful grinding it sit flush!

Once all work was finished i installed and have no issues whatsoever! 90amp unit works and fits as OEM.

ND alternator P/N (193081)

Going to do more research and see if i can find part numbers for the ND 80amp alternator to see if its possible to get just the back ear portion of the alternator but overall i hope this helps any other 91-92 3FE owners with the infamous 90amp alternator!

I have some questions.
The 1991-mid 1992 FJ80 came with a Denso 80 amp alternator with an EXTERNAL fan (27060-61091).
The 90 Amp Denso unit (27060-61100) in later 1992 FJ80s had an internal fan.
Your pics show both alternators with internal fans.

Hey Jon

Apologize on such a late response life has been a little crazy!

So unfortunately I did a poor job with documentation for the alternators I have but I’ll explain it best I can! Unfortunately a lot of the images you see are screenshots from videos and I just didn’t get a good shot of which ones have fans and which don't so I’ll explain.

So of the 4 alternator I have; 1x new Toyota remanned 90amp with narrow ears and no external fan, 1x Nippon-Denso branded 80amp with wide mounting ears and no external fan, 1x no name 80amp with wide mounting ears and external fan (60 series plug), and a Toyota factory 80amp with wide mounting ears and external fan (factory equipped)

This is in order from the images I posted earlier in the thread (images showing the back halves)

Below I’ve included the P/N for the Nippon-Desno model that I used to help modify the 90amp alternator to make work in my 80

I’ve tried finding more info on this model but the part number doesn’t give you much in terms of google search (assuming discontinued)

Although this isn’t going to be a common solution for everyone who’s had this issue i was hoping to
At least provide the community with another option vs. Whats been the only way to make this work.

Going to log into my old eBay account and see if I can source more information on where I got this alternator and I’ll post my findings!

Here is the link from eBay from where i purchased the alternator; the ad says its a 90amp and shows images of the narrow mounting ears but look through the listing images and you'll see the the back plate i used from the ND alternator to make the 90amp fit in my 80

for the price could be worth it just for the backplate; the alternator itself lasted a year so maybe not a bad backup for the time either!

hope this helps!!

Good work...
I ditched my 80 amp and ran a 150amp now to power my elec. fans. Works great and AC is working 100% better....

if i could go back in time i would've just upgraded to the 120amp or something along these lines! I had to make my setup work just due to the fact how much i had invested lol

Would love to see more on your radiator setup though looks badass!
