80 vs 100 series LC

Lx450 for me and a 100 for the wifey. 100 makes a much better mall/grocery go getter. Though she loves the attention she gets driving the LX450
 
There is one factor that nobody has mentioned, which I think makes the decision brainless:

Parts Availability.

The 100 has (up to) ten more years of parts support by Toyota than the 80.

I've never driven an 80 or a 100 (I have a 60), but I can tell you that when Toyota decides to drop the axe..... it comes down swift and without warning.

One year everything seems available, then when you wake up the next day... most of its NLA.

Do yourself a favor and get the 100. At this point it doesn't matter about the perceived nuances of theoretical off road capability.

Although I prefer the 80, I would NEVER buy one.... simply because of future parts support.

The 80 series seems to be quickly approaching the end of its support.
Especially if it's OBD1.
I just got a $2,400 repair bill on my 80 series. Nothing broken, just chain replacement and front n rear main seals. (And brakes).
I'm thinking she needs to go to a wrencher who can do this stuff theirselves,
Anyone wanna trade a bitchen triple locked and under-utilized lifted 80series for a stock(ish) 100 series?
Heck, now that typed that, I'm kinda serious..........
 
I, too, have concluded that if you're not going to work on your 80 Series yourself you should probably sell it. These things are getting old, and at least I am, too. I enjoy working on my 80, but I think about ten years from now and I don't think I'm going to want to be on my back in the driveway fighting with tools at that point. I have a really nice locked 80 Series which I plan to keep for years, but when I'm ready to move on it's going to be a 100 Series and I'm not planning to work on it myself nearly as much.
 
If you're the kind that showers everyday go for the 100. If you think dirt on your shoes means you need new shoes go for the 100. If you haven't camped since 1982 go for the 100. If you can't grow a beard go for the 100. If you own a Tommy Bahama shirt go for the 100. If your arms don't fill out your polo go for the 100. If you prefer tea over beer go for the 100. If you wear gloves whilst driving your Miata go for the 100. If your food can't touch the other food go for the 100. If you get Starbucks giftcards go for the 100. If your golf handicap is less than 25 go for the 100. If you wanted to be a cowboy as a kid...the 80!

Over the last 10 years I have owned 6 - 80 series and 5 - 100 series and currently own both a FZJ80 and a LX470. If I could only own one is would be a 100 series but the 80 series is a better off road choice for the trails I mostly frequent.

Seeing as it'll be awhile before 105's can be imported, if it weren't for the extreme expense I'd buy a creme puff LX470 and have it mated to an 80-Series frame (i.e. custom auto shop '105').

Had a great conversation recently with "Mr. LandCruiser Japan" on this very subject. He had nothing nice to say about anything after the 80 Series.

That's about where I'm at. A real wrencher would do the work my Clifford needs with a buddy in a weekend and call it a fun time.
I'm not a wrencher, have no real manly tools, and though I am not apposed to learning and collecting the tools and expertise needed, I'm surely not going to risk my daily driver and family adventure wagon to my double left thumbed learning curve.
I'm just not sure what's more cost effective, selling it as is and letting the future owner do the work and painting it how they want it too? Or paying the shop for the work and me putting the bedliner paint job on it, then selling. She's got twenty years of Arizona sun crusting the paint up and now that we are in Idaho where they actually have humidity that needs to be addressed post haste.
Kind of a catch 22.
Maybe I'll just mortgage a kidney and get a new 200 series. Wait, I'd need-----*carry the 7*----- about four kidneys to make that work..... So I guess a 1999 with rear locker will do just fine.

With regard to any "newer" vehicle, people always revert to the last or 2-3 model years prior as being the last of the great "XYZ". In the case of the Land Cruiser variants available to the U.S., the 80 series REALLY is the "last of the true Land Cruisers"!

I'm hunting for an 80 series as a project and they are badass. Props to you all. However, I couldn't read any more bashing on 200's without posting my rig. It's ok, you can admit it's friggin sweet. It gets me anywhere I want to go and keeps my drinks cold in the center cooler box - ha
I'll be bugging you all soon enough.
