Well good thing my buddy Marc was kind of taking his time on the turbo manifold, I have done some more research and it turns out that most if not all of the manufactures recommend that you do not hang a large turbo upside down when you are using a v-band and not a 4 bolt flange, so the design of the manifold will change to put the turbo on top. It will make it a little harder to route the downpipe and the air outlet but it will be much easier fitment of the actual turbo.

I'm curious, are you doing any drafting to design this layout or are you expecting to make/fit/rework/fit/hand fit everything as you go? It seems to me that it almost may be easier to draw it all out, but maybe not........ Do you think you will have to modify the hood to get all this in there?

I saw a mid- 80's Camaro with a GIANT turbo on it last week (454 punched to 5XX") as a door slammer drag racer. The intake was right in front and the exhaust was out the RF fender, pointing up, just behind the front tire. Obviously no "muffler" of any sort.

You know it would be easier to draw it all out, but I do not have the program or experience to CAD it out and really Marc is not a CAD guy so giving it to him, he could very easily just be like hey dummy this looks great on paper but how in the hell am I going to weld this joint, etc. So I trust him to make it all work. I had given him requirements for the bottom mount turbo setup and now I have changed my mind I gave him a rough idea of where I want the turbo and told him to just work his magic making it fit.

Yeah I imagine a 5xx" motor would need a huge turbo! That is more than twice the size of the 1FZ so it was probably a 90-100mm turbo while I am only running a 76mm. I am going to run a 4" electric cutout just at the bottom of the downpipe, exiting right under the front of the passenger's door. lol.

Nope no turbo's out the hood, no scream pipe, not exhaust cutouts in the fender, it will look very stockish.

Position it low. Get the turbo xhaust portion just behind the shock tower.
Would be easier to do your equal length manifold runners. Also be easy to brace the manifold for strength with a top mount. Oil return is easy to route and oil feed just as simple. 3" xhaust is easy out over chassis. Might want to look at 3" oval pipe over chassis portion. My 3" xhaust has had a rattle or 2 due to the close proximity.
 
Yeah it's an oil and water cooled turbo, not worried about routing those lines in either setup the turbo will still be higher than the oil pan.

3" exhaust won't be big enough, it's a 4" outlet on the back of the turbo so will be doing a 4" down pipe and a 4" electric cutout. I will not need to worry about clearance since this isn't a rock crawler the only issue would be going over the rear axle so I might just get it close and put a turn down on it.
 
Xhaust std route is out the wheel well over chassis then back over chassis below passenger seat.
The over chassis below passenger seat is tight.

Perhaps route from turbo and keep it inside the chassis.

Over the rear axle lots of space.
 
For this one, I would route it over the frame behind the front tire, stay in that area and dump out the side just in front of the RR tire. Don't shoot it down, or any oil/water/etc that makes it through could cause loss of traction on that wheel and be a problem.
 
Why not just change the clamp style from V-band to bolts?
 
That could be done but I am not sure it's worth the hassle just to mount the turbo down instead of up. If I would have planned better I could have used a T4 flanged housing for less than half of what my Tial stainless housing costs, but I went with the stainless housing since it is smaller and less weight. In a perfect world there would be a housing like the Tial with those great smooth transitions and dual scroll, but there just isn't. I tried to do my best to weigh out all my options and pick what I thought would work best for this build. Sometimes I get it just right, sometimes I stumble a little bit. I am not really sure if this is a stumble since the Tial vband stainless housing does still have benefits over the iron Garrett housing.

Just like anything that hasn't been done a lot before there are; learning curves, educated guesses, and the end reality. Juggling all of them is what keeps my brain working. So I guess we will see what happens lol

After having driven an 80 with the proper amount of power. I can honestly say the person who comes up with a good, well priced, decent solution for repower is going to be very popular.

Heh.. I had a 93 4runner with 350k miles, before I got my cruiser.... It was like going from a pinto to a corvette :D

Just spent the last 2 hours reading this awesome thread.

Absolutely insane build! Cant wait to see the finished product, and some dyno numbers/ 0-60 times!
 
Hmmm nothing really significant.

Still waiting on the body shop to fit me in. I like that they only take cars they can work on so they don't have projects just sitting there.

I did look over the hood/grill/intercooler situation.
- I bought Aerocatch latches for the hood that will be installed when the hood vents are cut in. This will allow me to remove the hood latch and support from the center of the grill.
- With the support and latch out of the middle of the grill I also looked at the thickness of the plastic grill slats and decided that they will get cut out and I ordered some aluminum hexagon hole sheeting that will be replacing it.

Those mods should give me a lot of room behind the grill. for a 3.5-4" IC


My buddy Marc told me he should be able to have something in my hands in 3 weeks for the manifold. But I am not so sure. He is a pretty awesome fabricator and his time is in high demand and I am not sure where I slot in.

OH and I did take the wheels and tires to Delta V Motorsports here in Richmond to have them mounted and balanced. Just found them on tirerack.com

The guy seemed a little uninterested when I told them I had wheels and tires to mount.
Then he asked what size, and I told him and he perked up a little, and was like what are these going on?
Then I told him, and he perked up but kind of in disbelief
He said, "Umm a Land Cruiser?"
I said, "Yep, but kind of modified, I know it is dumb trust me"
He said, "Like a Toyota Land Cruiser?"
Me, "Yep"
Him, "What year?? I have a 99 and it is not a sports car"
Me, "Yeah I know, mine is a 97...... but it is going to be. I am putting a turbo on it."
Him, "Have you ever turbo'd a car before"
Me, "Yeah a couple....... I drove my '96 Turbo Land Cruiser over here today"

And once I pulled it in and unloaded the wheels and tires he had me pop the hood and the shop shutdown while all the mechanics came and kicked the tires. haha.

Turns out he used to be a Land Cruiser guy, had an 83, FJ40, knows Lance Williams at Iron Pig, had an 80 series before his '99 100 series. Was pretty cool to just happen across a Land Cruiser guy that also happens to own a car shop. haha.

Oh and I have been goofing off spending some of my time with a motorbicycle idea I have using a 160-200cc souped up engine and gates belt drives. lol.

i.e. but using very modern materials and technology.
